Using his "End Poverty in California" movement (more commonly called EPIC) as a springboard, Sinclair ran for governor as a Democrat, equipped with a bold plan to end the Depression in California by taking over idle land and factories and turning them into cooperative ventures for the unemployed. To his surprise, thousands rallied to the idea, converting what he had assumed would be another of his utopian schemes into a mass political movement of extraordinary dimensions. With a loosely knit organization of hundreds of local EPIC clubs, Sinclair overwhelmed the moderate Democratic opposition to capture the primary election. When it came to the general election, however, his opposition employed highly effective campaign tactics: overwhelming media hostility, vicious red-baiting and voter intimidation, high-priced dirty tricks. The result was a resounding defeat in November.

I, Candidate tells the story of Sinclair's campaign while also capturing the turbulent political mood of the 1930s. Employing his trademark muckraking style, Sinclair exposes the conspiracies of power that ensured big-money control over the media and other powerful institutions.

Surprising and Enjoyable

This excellant account of the race for governor in California offers unique insight into the tactics and motivations of the canidates and their supporters with a wry but rarely bitter pen. Written by Sinclair almost imediately after the conclusion of the race, this journal of sorts sheds first hand light on the California of 1934. A California that disturbingly resembles the America of today. The connection I made with the author's deepest values allows me to accept Upton Sinclair as worthy of my emulation. Read this.

This was a great read. MashaAllah! Saiyyad Salahuddin and Fareed Ahmad have done a remarkable job in addressing many of the commonly touted questions that theists (not just Muslims) will hear from atheists. At all times though, the book is respectful to all audiences and presents extremely cogent arguments for the skeptic mind. Also, I loved the fact that the authors took the time to send me a signed copy. It made my day and I hope they continue to do the same for other readers as well InshaAllah.

God, Islam, and the Skeptic Mind is the first book of its kind, which addresses some of the most pertinent questions from an Islamic perspective. The authors do a phenomenal job of simplifying complex arguments to make this work accessible to a larger audience while also ensuring that the arguments are represented correctly. I would highly recommend this book!

IF ever in modern times, Islam has been brought to life by using all of the tools available to scholars, this is it.
It is not just the depth of understanding of the noble book, the Qu'ran, but their knowledge of modern science in the fields of matter and existence.
Being and Consciousness are explained in the simplest fashion to the extent that the average person can relate, not only fully, but convincingly.
Now, one can understand why so many are doing their best to vilify , de-legitimize and keep an open discussion of Islam from the public ear.
The rest of the world is way ahead of us and now we know why Islam is the fastest growing ethical and moral system that man has ever known.
It is truly unstoppable and it shouldn't be. This book should be read twice to fully taste its sweetness.

Phyllis Reid, MSW, CPP is a Clinical Social Worker who works as a Psychotherapist with adults, children and families in various inner city schools and communities in Miami for over a decade. She holds a masters degree in social work, bachelor degrees in Psychology, Behavioral Sciences and is a trained Traumatologist. She is a strong proponent of cultural diversity, something she states is as natural to her as the skin that covers her body. She attributes this to being born and raised in her diverse cultural and ethnic island home of Jamaica, with its motto, Out of Many One People. Miami s multi-cultural make up was one of the reasons she decided to reside there for over thirty five years and continues to serve its diverse population.

Powerful Positive Message

As I prepared myself to read this book, I was under the assumption that it was "just a children's book", but as I began reading, I realized that this book was backed by a powerful message that would speak volumes about the author and it would relate to people of all walks of life. A message about a group of friends "brothers and sisters", that share their world, and their view of how its all relative, while enjoying a day out at the park, you learn that these children are full of faith and love, and have come to share their strong moral values by empowering another group who could benefit from their beliefs and positivity. The book brings everything of the world together and puts unity into focus. One Diverse Universe is an amazing read, with beautiful, colorful and vivid images and graphics, that appeal to the senses and imagination. The Puzzle that isn't complete without each individual unique piece, we come together, problem solving, analytic thinking, imagination, inspiration, beauty and faith, this book has a wide combination of positive aspects that anyone reading it can walk away feeling at peace.
Moral of the story: "Accept, respect, spread peace and love..." and "the answer is one, oneness; we are all one, one God, one universe, one world, one family of man." Very enjoyable read.

Great Teaching Tool

This book has an amazing outlook on bringing everyone together. With small children teaching the lesson, This is a great way for children to connect with them and see the world as they do. For me and my children this helps bring it to life.
This book also is a great jumping off board to talk to your children about the world being one place and we are all connected. My children learned so much as did I about the greater good and understanding of Gods plan for us to live in harmony as a One.

I recommend this book to all parents of school aged kids. It will help them understand that we are one in this big world and should take care of each other.

A perspective on Gadamer

"Hermeneutics and the Voice of the Other: Re-reading Gadamer's Philosophical Hermeneutics," by James Risser, is, on the whole, a well-written and accessible text. As the book's subtitle indicates, it is a look at the work of 20th century thinker Hans-Georg Gadamer, whose 1960 book "Truth and Method" looms large in academia. In his introduction, Risser notes that the "aim of this book [...] is to treat philosophical hermeneutics in a more encompassing way, in a way that takes account of the complexity and breadth of the project of philosophical hermeneutics."
Risser reflects on the relationship of Gadamer's work to the work of such related thinkers as Heidegger, Kant, Husserl, Kierkegaard, and Derrida. He addresses the concerns of Gadamer critics John Caputo and Richard Bernstein. Risser looks at some specific controversies surrounding Gadamer's work, such as the debate over Gadamer's concept of "prejudice."
I found one of the more interesting parts of the book to be Risser's look at the relevance of "Buber's distinction between an I-It relation and an I-Thou relation" to Gadamer's work. I was also intrigued by Risser's thoughts on "the concept of play" ("Spiel" in German) in Gadamer's work.
If you're turned off by phrases like "an Aristotelico-Hegelian metaphysics of infinity," you might want to avoid this book. But on the whole I found Risser's prose quite engaging. My main disappointment with the book stems from my expectations regarding the book's title. Risser talks about the voice of the "other," but I didn't see anything in the book which really explored what makes an "other" an "other." In particular, I finished the book wondering what relevance Risser's work (and Gadamer's by extension) has on postmodern debates over difference in race, gender, class, etc. Significantly, such terms as "race," "gender," etc. don't even appear in the index. My advice: supplement your reading of this book with Adrienne Rich's "Blood, Bread, and Poetry" or Audre Lorde's "Sister Outsider."
Risser's prose gets a bit "touchy-feely" towards the end, as he reflects on commonalities between poetry and philosophy and waxes poetic himself on such concepts on grace, kindness, friendship, and the "radiant word." (But I admit: I liked the "touchy-feely" stuff.) Not a wholly satisfying book, but nonetheless an admirable achievement.

This book is older but it deals with a lot of the details that others gloss over and has you working through the nitty gritty bits.

Invaluable Author

There are so many books on Compilers & their Design. Why does this stand out? (1) It's out of print. (2) If you want to see - everything! It is in there. (3) There are no hidden issues / vacuously covered details.

Too many computer Writers do just that! Check out Holub's article in Visual Studio's v6 Developers Network - resource.

Don't hesitate to buy this one: you won't be sorry!!

This book is a must have. It uses the dragon book (Compilers: principles, techniques and tools by Aho et.al) as a model but goes a great deal further in its use of examples when explaining the theory. Whenever I had a little trouble understanding the dragon book or wished that more examples were used I turned to Holub's book. The book is extremely well organized. If you want the theory its all there and if you want to just look at code its all there too: thousands of lines of it! After explaining everything you actually get to see how lex and yacc are built (from the ground up) and finally a C compiler. BUY IT NOW!!
