The U.S.S. Scorpion SSN 589, a 99-man fast attack submarine, sank 400 miles southwest of the Azores on May 22, 1968, a time during the Cold War when the Soviet Navy was expanding and becoming more aggressive. The Navy's top secret court of inquiry, however, theorized that the Scorpion was sunk by its own hot-running torpedo, not an enemy vessel. In this thorough post-mortem, military beat reporter Offley challenges the Navy's official report-including details like when the wreckage was found and what the sub's mission had been-with a succinct charge: "It was all a lie." Offley believes the Scorpion was sunk by the Soviets, in retaliation for the loss of one of their subs two months prior. Using the U.S.S. Pueblo incident of January, 1968, in which key cryptography gear was lost, Offley connects the dots between the Navy, the John Walker spy ring, and Soviet intelligence to conclude that the Russians had access to all of the Navy's most secret communications, allowing them to ambush the Scorpion. Most of Offley's argument, while compelling, is based solely on interviews with former Navy personnel, and a lack of factual evidence weakens it. Still, this well-told narrative history holds much appeal for naval historians and conspiracy buffs.

On May 22, 1968, the submarine Scorpion exploded and sank 400 miles southeast of the Azores, killing all 99 men aboard. It had been torpedoed by a Soviet submarine in retaliation for its suspected involvement in the disappearance 11 weeks earlier of the Soviet submarine K-129. Oilley believes that admirals in the U.S and Soviet navies--fearing what could become World War III--agreed to hide the truth of the two sinkings. Only 91 seconds after the torpedo struck, the Scorpion plunged 1,300 feet below the surface. By May 31, a search force had increased to 55 surface ships and submarines and three dozen land-based patrol aircraft. On June 5, the U.S. declared that it was lost at sea, and on October 30, the navy announced the discovery of the vessel. Based on 25 years of research, which included investigating declassified navy documents, Offley reveals details of the events that led to the vessel's sinking and the cover-up that followed. He has written a searing account of this tragedy at sea. George Cohen

A most interesting tale, this book answers many of the lingering questions concerning the loss of the Scorpion back in 1968. Mr. Offley presents a strong case for the one conclusion that might have started a war back then, I,e, that the sub was attacked and sunk . Dr Ballard's pictures make it clear that there is evidence of a torpedo strike on the sub, and this puts the lie to the official version of what happened. It would also explain certain reports that came out in the so called Russian Spring.This book deserves to be read by everyone.

About the Author
Professor John Watton began his career in industry working on the design of heat exchangers. He later entered University College Cardiff to study mechanical engineering. On completion of his PhD in fluidic control in 1969 he returned to industry as a Senior Systems Engineer working on the electrohydraulic control of guided pipe laying vehicles with Hudswell Badger Ltd, Leeds. Following a period as a Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering and Control at Huddersfield Polytechnic, he joined Cardiff University as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1979. He was awarded his DSc (University of Wales) for contributions to fluid power in 1996. He also received the IMechE Bramah Medal in 2000 and a special award from the Japanese Fluid Power Society in 2005, both for outstanding contributions in fluid power. He was elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1997 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007.

About the Author

Steven E. Barkan is Professor of sociology at the University of Maine, where he has taught since 1979. His teaching and research interests include criminology, sociology of law, and social movements. He is the 2008-2009 president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems and had previously served as a member of the SSSP Board of Directors, as chair of its Law and Society Division and Editorial and Publications Committee, and as an advisory editor of its journal,Social Problems. He has served on the student paper award committees of the Crime, Law, and Deviance and Sociology of Law sections of the American Sociological Association. Professor Barkan has written many journal articles dealing with topics such as racial prejudice and death penalty attitudes, views on police brutality, political trials, and feminist activism. These articles have appeared in the American Sociological Review, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Journal of Crime and Justice, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Justice Quarterly, Social Forces, Social Problems, Sociological Forum, Sociological Inquiry, and other journals. For Prentice Hall, he is the author of Criminology: A Sociological Understanding, 4/e and of Law and Society: An Introduction (both coming out in early 2008).

Great for Beginners

I have tried hacking before, years ago with no success. There are a lot more tools now (I've learned) and I'm sure there is a lot more info online but finding the right info and things that actually work can be a daunting task in itself. You can find the info you need online for anything these days if you want to work that hard. I don't. I especially like all the screen shots. I hate it when the instructions take you through multiple steps and then show you a screenshot. When mine doesn't look like theirs, I have no clue where I went wrong. Thanks to all those screenshots, that doesn't happen with this book. Big plus!

I saw this book and thought it would make an interesting summer project. And it has been! Setting up the lab was challenging but the instructions were great. Be prepared for a lot of "I did it!" rushes as you work through this book. I especially enjoyed the Exploit Development chapters. I can't compare it to other books on the subject but you won't be disappointed with this one. It is truly a great book for beginners on the subject. It does not make you an expert but I feel I know enough to be of use on a team of pentesters.

An excellent resource for people looking for an introduction to penetration testing

Penetration testing and hacking is a sexy subject. With all of the big public breaches every year, security has come to the forefront of many peoples minds and the demand for young skilled hackers is greater than ever. The problem is that many of these would be hackers have no idea where to begin. They don't have money for higher education of fancy certifications, so where do we as a security community tell them to begin. I always point people at books. They are generally inexpensive and easy to get. I have been doing penetration testing for a number of years professionally so I am familiar with all of the topics in this book already, however, I am constantly reading material like this so that I can find the best resources to point out to new hackers.

I found this book to be well laid out with lots of explanations and an easy to follow methodology. I believe some of the people who have previously reviewed the book forgot what it is like to start with zero knowledge. I know when I was starting in hacking, I was thankful for as many screenshots as possible so I knew I was entering the correct commands. I especially like the way the book follows the Penetration Testing Execution Standard (PTES).

If you are new to hacking or penetration testing, this is the perfect resource to get you started and help you determine if this is the correct career path for you!

Really Good - Out of Date

This is a good book with a lot of really good technical information. The unfortunate side of things is that the VMs required are almost impossible to get now due to not being supported so it is really hard to set up the lab to follow along. You just have to get creative. I am hoping that they are in the works for an update on this because it has the potential to be really good. When it was released it was easily 5 stars.

Missed opportunity to say something worthwhile

I usually love books that expose me to other cultures and experiences. I didn't care for this one. I wasn't turned off by language as some others seem to be, but I was turned off by tone. Rather than giving the reader insight, it's merely a personal success story written in a "I'm too cool for you" tone. I finished it, but I don know why.

You like basketball and hip-hop

I'm halfway through it and it's insufferable. I'd seen Eddie on Bill Maher's show a few times and he seemed interesting. Yet his memoir makes it clear he doesn't have a modest bone in his body. He talks about the appropriation of Chinese cuisine by white Americans, but he's blind to the fact that he shamelessly appropriates black culture. You like basketball and hip-hop? That's cool, but you grew up in a gated community and went to private school, so you're a little inauthentic. Eddie's pretty much a real-life version of the guy in "Malibu's Most Wanted."

Interesting, but not at all the book I was expecting after seeing his interview on Bill Maher. Mr. Huang has much to say, but it is often difficult to follow how he is saying it. If you aren't versed in Hip Hop, you will have a great deal of trouble following much of the content.
