Provocative observations on the uses (and misuses) of ``classic'' fairy tales are overwhelmed by academic jargon in this oddly disjointed and disappointing study from Tatar (German Literature/Harvard). Expanding on her The Hard Facts of the Grimms' Fairy Tales (1987), Tatar examines the transformation of often ribald adult folk-tale prototypes into sometimes horrifyingly violent children's stories rooted in the assumptions and realities of a particular social context. At the time when such well-known collectors as the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, and Hans Christian Andersen were combining folk legends with the children's literary conventions of ``cautionary'' and ``exemplary'' stories, Tatar says, infant death, abandonment by parents, and starvation were not uncommon. Today, Tatar advises, these ``cruel'' and ``sadistic'' tales, anachronistic at best, with heroines earning redemption through ``a servile attitude'' and obedience, should yield to ``a creative folklore...reinvented by each generation of storytellers and reinvested with creative social energy.'' The author fails to elaborate on this point, however, with more than sketchy suggestions about discussing stories with children. Tatar does provide a neat common-sensical corrective to the interpretive inversions of Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment (1976), in which child victims become psychologically muddled villains (the starving Hansel and Gretel, Tatar points out, have reasons to devour the witch's house far more compelling than Bettelheim's ``uncontrolled cravings''). The author also offers an interesting dissection of the pervasive sexism of many fairy tales (why all the female villains?). The dreary monograph form of much of the book never quite gels, unfortunately, with Tatar's practical, if undeveloped, popular exhortations. A stellar resource

Tatar's text discusses readers as an "interpretive community" of individuals who are responsible for distilling meaning from stories independently but within a cultural framework. She points to an agenda of socialization and acculturization in children's literature, and notes that the values meant to be conveyed have shifted over the centuries. Though some of the language follows the challenging tone of literary criticism, on the whole this is a very readable text filled with invaluable insights.

Of particular interest is a chapter devoted to the study of fairy tale heroines, in which Tatar asserts that the characters' roles were meant to groom them for marriage and subservience. The text is well-researched, well-written and thoroughly considered. Though it displays a clear feminist bias, the observations stemming from that bias help to make this book of particular use to anyone interested in exploring the use of fairy tales as a form of indoctrination for young girls, as well as the villainization of women in fairy tales.

Maria Tartar's _Off With Their Heads_ is a brillilant analysis of European folklore and fairytales, showing not only the surreptitious way in which familar stories were "sanitized" for publication by notable folklorists such as the Grimms, but also the way in which the messages of the stories subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) were manipulated to become cautionary tales and to frighten children into behaving as adults want them to.

As D.Blankenship points out, much of Tartar's analysis is through a feminist lens; this makes sense, as many of the stories examined have female protagonists (from Rapunzel to Cinderella to the lesser-known "Mother Holle.") The gist being that girls are taught from a young age (old enough to listen and understand children's stories) that (1) beauty wins over ugliness, (2) minding your parents - especially your father - is rewarded, and (3) not minding your parents typically results in a horrible punishment disproportionate to the act. Later chapters are analyzed with a more psych-analytical lens, but with similar conclusions regarding wish-fulfillment and child-parent relations.

What struck me most powerfully was the way in which folktales, which were originally very scatalogical and "earthy" were modified and re-written to become not only cautionary tales, but also tales to "improve the moral standing" of children. That particular emphasis was put on breaking the spirit of the child - the earlier the better - in order to make them malleable and manageable I found particularly interesting (and appalling.) Given the early stages of industrialization when many of these tales were put to print, this makes sense. Tartar doesn't go far enough, I think, in drawing the parallel that these ideas remain in some parenting books and in the way in which some children are instructed even today.

A fascinating read, and one which I strongly recommend, particularly to those who have children or teach.

Surprisingly Good

If you're interested in microdosing, this is one of the best guides I've seen. It's concise, but it's very practical in pretty much every respect (purchasing substances, measuring doses, determining purpose and proper dosage, etc.).

This is not a book that will necessarily persuade you to try microdosing if you're not already so inclined. It does discuss many of the benefits, but for anybody who is skeptical, it will likely take a lot more than just this book.

That said, I was very surprised at how good and useful this book is. So many Kindle books are badly written and poorly researched these days. In this case, though, the author has put in the necessary time and effort to make this book both useful and informative on a practical and theoretical level.

Very good overview of microdosing

Very concise, informative read, packing everything you need to know about microdosing into one, slick package. I knew next to nothing about the topic before I started reading, and now I feel like I have a solid grasp of the idea. (It turns out LSD isn't *just* for staying in all day in your underwear tripping to Sgt. Pepper--who knew?)

As the book presents both the good and bad, risks and rewards, I strongly recommend this guidebook for people who are interested in microdosing.

Not that insightful really.

Granted that there is not much information (yet) with regards to microdosing (MD), which means that there is not much to report on.

If you have done even a little research on MD you will find many instances of 'copy and paste' inside and constant references to outside sources. Not much 'insight' unfortunately.

If you're lazy or just starting your research I guess it may be a starting point, but not much to write home about.

Attempts to cover too much information and leaves behind a lot of basics

This review comes from an experienced PHP programmer (10+ years) who knows OOP, and has worked with other PHP frameworks like Symfony. I bought it to see what the Zend Framework was all about. After reading this book (and realizing I hadn't learned much) I took two courses from Zend that really cleared things up. Yes, I know the courses are much more expensive than this book, and don't pretend a book to compete with that.

A good analogy to explain what this book does is: it gives you the cooked fish instead of teaching you how to fish.

For example, right on page 33 it shows you how to use modules which is definitely not needed for beginners or even required to do a successful ZF project. Here's a quote from Matthew O'Phinney (Zend Framework's main contributor as of 18/Sept/2010) "modules are really second-class citizens in ZF currently." ([...]).

It also jumps to forms use right in page 47 without covering very basic things like how to get a Bootstrap instance from a Controller Action (which is used in real life WAY more than modules or forms), or how to work with Application Resources in the Bootstrap. I'm not saying "don't go into forms at all", I'm just saying that covering it on page 47 is jumping the gun a little. Note that if you are -as the title states- a ZF "beginner", by the point where forms are presented you STILL don't have the tools to do anything on your own, other than the little things the book has shown you. And again, the book shows you how to do a couple things, but doesn't go into WHY you want to do that.

By page 100 it starts with the Model and instead of using ZF's own database components, the author decides to use the Doctrine ORM which is way waaaaay more complicated than using Zend_Db. Again, Doctrine is a wonderful package and I use it ofter because of its amazing features, but it is not for the faint of heart, and definitely not for a ZF beginner. Actually for the project this book proposes there is absolutely no need to use Doctrine; you could do all you need by using Zend_Db and its related classes. None of the features that you'd normaly use Doctrine for are used here. So again, this book jumps the gun once more.

The good thing about this book are the links at the end of each chapter. They point to VERY useful references that expand on what the chapter covered. There are also "ASK THE EXPERT" boxes with some useful info too.

I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner rather than an intermediate ZF user who wants to see a different take on a ZF project (like for example how to use doctrine on your models).

Excellent coverage of a huge topic in a small amount of space

I had a lot of programming experience in C, Fortran, etc, but zero web programming experience when I bought this book along with a number of others on html, css, php, mysql, javascript, ajax, and another on Zend Framework. Out of them all, I found myself spending about 80% of my time with this book. I think the reason was that it acted as a roadmap for what I needed to learn about next to understand how to build a real-life non-trivial web 2.0 application. It doesn't go into a huge amount of detail on any one aspect. Instead it presents a series of real-life problems to solve in the context of implementing a very well-chosen sample application.

It explores one or two ways to solve each problem making best use of the Framework. It then settles on a particular way to do it in the sample, usually with very good explanations for why he chooses the solution he does, and provides lots of references to good, current online sources of information about other choices as well as more detail on the one chosen. A lot of other (thicker) books, as well as the Zend Framework Reference Manual, and much of the online information in forums, try to demonstrate how many different ways the author knows how to skin a cat, and go into detail on each one, without ever giving any guidance on how to choose among them. An alternative is overview books that are a lot thinner, but they don't give enough detail to actually build anything significant. This book strikes a happy middle ground with good overview material showing how the big pieces fit together, discussion of alternative solutions with references providing details on them all, and then real code implementing one or two of the choices. There are separate stand-alone code examples that help explain alternatives, but each chapter provides code that contributes to a single application that ties it all together, and that can be downloaded and run. There might have been one or two minor problems that I encountered getting it to run (on XP with XAMPP for Windows 1.7.3 and Zend Framework 1.10.7), but even though I had never seen php code before, it wasn't very hard to get it running.

The book is also very current, and it works to present current best practices. Another review mentioned that choosing to use Doctrine instead of Zend_Db seemed like a bad idea. But I would argue that there are plenty of good references and examples of code using Zend_Db. Doctrine really seems to be gaining traction, and using it within Zend Framework is something someone just starting to use the framework would be better off learning than Zend_Db. You go to a framework to get some leverage on complex problems, and Doctrine gives you so much more leverage than Zend_Db. That choice also serves as a demonstration for how extensible and flexible the framework is, which is important for a new user to understand.

Of the 17 books on various aspects of web programming that I can see from where I'm sitting, this is the only one with noticeable wear.

Newbie review of Zend Framework A Beginners Guide

This is the first review of any book that I've ever bought. I'm a part time Hons Degree student and I have to develop a web application based on an existing desktop application as my final project.

I have purchased many books over the course of my degree and before it, some are on par with this book some are so poor I've either gotten refunds or they are used to prop up my monitor. I felt that I had to write this review because without this book I would be sunk. I have one php and one Ruby module under my belt from college so I guess that the book is not really aimed at me, as it says in the book it is intended for those with a firm knowledge of PHP. However I have found that the content is so easily explained that I have had no real issues with developing the base of my app.

I would have liked to see more content given to Ajax such as searching with Ajax, a section explaining Zend_Session_Namespace and how to handle updates etc of models with composite primary keys, hence only the four stars. However to be fair this is more due to the fact that the documentation on the Zend Site is so poor and the majority of examples I found online are outdated and don't work with the latest version of the framework.
I have also found that the author to be very helpful and approachable. He answered the questions I had about the content of the book and provided some helpful links. This is a major first as I've contacted the authors from other books (mainly those propping up my monitor now) and am still waiting for a reply. Thank you Vikram.

Nancy Bubel, co-author of the classic best-selling guide, Root Cellaring, was a gardening columnist for Country Journal magazine and wrote for Mother Earth News, Organic Gardening, Horticulture, Family Circle, Woman’s Day and New Shelter magazines. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Society for Economic Botany, and a life member of both the Seed Savers Exchange and the Friends of the Trees Society.

Worth the money!

Good book and well organized. It covered everything I wanted to know about cold storage of produce and other foods. It helped me make decisions about how and where to store our garden's bounty. We managed to grow 450 pounds of winter squash this year, 150 pounds of potatoes and 15 pounds of garlic! The book has encouraged me to try growing & storing cabbages, carrots, and onions next year.

Inspiring!

Great book that is well organized starting with good gardening tips, all the small details in between, to all the ways to create a cellar! There is even a chapter of experiences from different people with different ways they did they root cellars and recipes at the end. This book left me feeling very inspired and definitely gave me ideas of how to.

Very comprehensive approach!

I was VERY impressed by this book! I haven't had a chance to try out any of the techniques it suggests yet, but I look forward to doing so.
I was surprised and delighted by how heavily the book emphasizes garden planning for root cellaring, without skimping on information about setting up storage locations. Whether you have a root cellar already and just don't know what to do with it, have room for a cellar on your property, or if you just have a postage stamp garden and a chilly windowsill, you can find something in this book you can use!

About the Author
Agnes DeFranco is a Professor of Finance and Accounting at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. Her research areas are hospitality finance, cost control, accounting, and cultural and diversity issues. She has been recognized with the Dean's Award for Excellence in Applied Research. She is also the 2006–2007 President of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals, an international professional association formed in 1952 with over 4,600 members worldwide.

Thomas Lattin is a CPA who has earned partner status with three international hospitality accounting/consulting firms and served as president of a national hotel management company as well as president of a publicly traded hotel real estate investment trust. He is currently the Sir Rocco Forte Executive in Residence at the Conrad N. Hilton College at the University of Houston and Managing Director of Lattin & Associates, a management consulting firm.

Can Munowitz write or what! His hortatory, grab-'em-by-the-scruff-of-the-neck-and-don't-let-go-until-they-get-it style is great! It moves along and is not boring. This is an amazing book. It's not just beautifully written or perfectly accurate or entrancing to read, although it is all that. What is more important is that it practices what it describes, namely the scientific search for truth. About the Author
Michael Munowitz is a full-time science writer. A graduate of Yale University, he earned a Ph.D. in chemical physics from Harvard University and has held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Leiden and the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author most recently of Principles of
Chemistry, described by one reviewer as "the best-written general chemistry book I have ever read." He lives in Naperville, Illinois.

Beautifully written, but the devil is in the details

I'm sure that after reading all these blatantly contradictory reviews, you're a bit confused about this textbook. Is it the best thing since sliced bread, or is it something to be avoided at all costs?

Well, the complex truth is that it's both.

This book was written by someone who loves the subject, who's passionate about it, and that really shows in his writing. After reading flat and boring textbooks that read as though they were produced by sadists, all of a sudden you get an eloquent tribute to the wonderful, inspiring aspects of the field.

As a result, it appeals greatly to Chemistry teachers, especially the best ones - the ones who want to genuinely show their passion for the subject and inspire their students. And I don't blame those teachers. If I were one, I'd be strongly tempted to assign this book, because it is, well, actually good. Who wants to reward mediocrity in a world that's drab and dull enough?

So why are students less than appreciative?

Well, what you are expected to do in Chemistry is get through it. You're expected to do the math and solve the problems and pass the tests. It is not, from what I have seen, a subject that inspires students. It's one they have to survive.

And this book does not give students the tools they need to survive. Concepts like molecular weights and empirical formula -- boring concepts, but ones necessary to solve every chemistry problem that exists -- are glossed over at warp speed, dismissed in a single paragraph. They are relegated into the dreaded "R-pages", the segments of the book devoted to problem solving.

You are not asked to solve simple problems; you are plunged straight into complex, multilayered ones. Do not accuse this textbook of talking down to the reader! The problem is that it doesn't talk down to the reader enough, it just assumes that concepts like molecular weight are blindingly obvious. It dismisses them as simple stuff for simple minds and goes on at 500 miles an hour to show you the great stuff.

Whenever I picked up this book in an effort to entertain, it fascinated me. But when I looked to it to help me solve a problem, it was worse than useless. It send me right back in the arms of a boring chemistry textbook that took the time to lay things out clearly.

This is a depressing review to write, because I really wanted to give this book five stars. The writing is that good. But I can't, since as a textbook, a book designed to teach people what they need to know to pass the exam, it's a complete failure.

Shed a tear. This one is close to greatness ... and fails out of hubris.

But I love flipping through it anyway.

great for mature learners

This book beautifully expalins the basic principles of chemistry. It is meant to be used by mature learners who understand what learning a subject is really about. Unfortuntely, most college students nowadays think learning is spitting out what they just swallowed without going through their mind. Our secondary education just does not prepare them well enough to use texts like this. They should start with a more traditional textbook and later on use this book to enhance their conceptual understaning of chemical principles.

Conceptually wonderful, but a nightmare applicably

I am a student of a reviewer above, and although he may find the text to be conceptually enlightening, for a student of first year chemistry applying it is a joke! Munowitz sets up his chapters unconventionally -- he explains concepts and 'derives' equations in the first part of the chapter, and then has a 'gray section' at the back of the chapter which contains problems and examples. Often the gray sections seem alien to the chapter before it: finding out how a redox reaction runs is much more concrete than describing what a Lewis base is. In order for Munowitz to be more effective, he must include his example in the body of the chapter itself, and marry concepts with applications. It is notable to include that the average grade on exams for students who take this class using the Munowitz book is about 50%, and most are very hardworking!
