Very in-depth exploration of the Gospel of Peter

In The Cross That Spoke, author John Crossan argues for an interdependent relationship between what he calls the Cross Gospel, the intracanonical gospels, and the extant fragments known as The Gospel of Peter. His assertion is based on a multi-faceted argument: that there was an original form of the Cross Gospel, that material was added to bring it in line with developing church doctrine, and that, eventually, portions of the original text were redacted to create a seamless final product. Crossan briefly describes the two relevant archaeological discoveries that yielded fragments of The Gospel of Peter and summarizes the development of scholarly opinion regarding their dependence, or lack thereof, upon the intracanonical gospels. With this background established, the majority of the book is devoted to proving his core assertions through careful textual analysis of innumerable biblical, apocryphal, and secular sources. Three final chapters discuss the theological ramifications of accepting the Cross Gospel as an original source for the existing Passion and Resurrection narratives.

About the Author

P.C. Cast is an award-winning fantasy and paranormal romance author, as well as an experienced speaker and teacher. With her daughter Kristin Cast, she is the author of the House of Night novels, including Awakened, Burned and Hunted. Cast was born in the Midwest, and as a girl fell in love with mythology. After high school, she joined the U.S. Air Force, then taught high school for 15 years before retiring to write full time. I feel like I am a fledgling at the House of Night.

I strongly advise anyone interested in the House of Night series to get this guide! No, it is not a guide into how P.C. and Kristen Cast created the House of Night series like most guide books, this is an actual fledgling handbook! This book goes over everything brought up in the series where Zoey and her friends would make any reference to the handbook. This book goes over various House of Night rituals and even incorporates some real life historical events to correlate with the Casts' dark world. This book is a must have companion for any House of Night fan!

Not what I expected

The Fledgling Handbook 101 turned out to be a disappointing read. I didn't even finish and passed it off to my son who also is an avid reader of the HON series. The book had a promising start with what you would expect to find in a 'handbook' for a vampyre fledgling. After the initial introduction of what to expect, description of the HON forms (which was interesting), Celebrations, and information about the Dark Daughters/Sons, the book just rambled off into history. I expected more information regarding what would be taught in the classes and daily life in the HON.

Ye who enter the House of Night will be welcomed as a new student and given The Fledgling Handbook 101 as a guide. Veteran vampires understand how difficult the conversion from sunlight to moonlight is. The guide provides the fledgling with an introduction to vampire life as an undead and the societal Maslow Hierarchy of surviving amidst the massive humans. There are treatises on vampire biology and history as the species traces its roots to Lilith. Included is a section on Nightkind Elementology, which is intended to help the newbie survive the terrors of the dark. A bit more experienced Fledglings like Zoey provides words of encouragement as they detail some of their adjustments. Finally a who's who like Sappho and Shekinah provide words of inspiration.

Young adult fans of the series will appreciate the entertaining handbook enhanced by Ms. Doner's colorful drawings as the newcomers are guided on what to expect as their body changes in a puberty-like twist. As Shekinah says: "Within chaos lies opportunity"; not for everybody as this entertaining reference guide is a companion piece to the saga by providing Fledglings and readers with increased opportunity of understand the world as Cast and less chaos.

I was now a matter of seconds away from the moment all the numbers stopped for ever. My career total of National Hunt winners would remain at 4,348 after this, my 17,546th ride. All the stats, the numbers that had governed my life for the last two decades, they were just a few hundred yards from being stilled for ever. My whole career, my whole adult life, had been built on making those numbers click upwards as fast as I could, but in a couple of furlongs they would never move again. Deciding to retire was the most difficult decision I've ever had to make. Fortunately I was able to go out at the very top, and being able to say that makes me a very, very lucky man indeed. And now, in this book, I've been able to look back over my entire career - both good and bad moments - and see it in its entirety: the biggest wins, the disappointments, the injuries and the tragedies, my wonderful family, and the amazing horses and the fantastic personalities I've worked with. 18,000 people turned up to that final race at Sandown, and I can now look back on my career with immense pride and gratitude. But that chapter of my life is closed. This book is the final word on my riding career - it's time to move forward.
