With each Earned-Allowance payment, money is divided into four categories: Giving, Short-Term Savings, Long-Term Savings, and Spending, which gets children into a lifetime habit of managing money wisely. The book is for any parent who has a child between the ages of 4 and 18.

About the Author
Katie Ely is an author and educator who gives practical, how-to advice on getting your kids to clean and manage money. She created the Rubric Rules when her twin boys were twelve and used them until they left for college. The method worked so well her husband urged her to copyright it and write a book. She also gives experienced, practical parenting advice on her website The Teacher Mom at www.theteachermom.tips . Katie holds a BS and a M.Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of Oklahoma and the University of Mississippi, respectively. Katie and her husband live in Oklahoma and have two adult sons.

Practical, helpful and easy-to-read; loved this book!

This is a tremendously helpful, easy-to-read guide for parents, caretakers, and anyone who regularly interacts with children. We are facing a generation of young people who are incredibly entitled and lack personal responsibility. Despite my good intentions, I wasn't sure exactly where to start in teaching my girls how to work hard and wondered if my kids were still too young. This book provided me with practical help and a simple process to follow. My daughters (ages 3 and 5) now not only clean their room, but they have also started taking on various responsibilities around the house. This book also includes sections on money management and how to relate it to household responsibilities, and is written so that it is relevant for parents of teenagers or toddlers. It has helped me tremendously! There are templates for various ages so you can actually see examples and make them fit your family/circumstances. So many parenting books I have read left me feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. The author Katie Ely writes from a down-to-earth perspective that encouraged me with her personal stories and challenged me with her wisdom. Buy this book if you are ready to teach your kiddos personal responsibility--you will not regret it!

Wonderful insight with easy to follow instructions. It was very easy for my 3rd graders to follow and they loved the pictures. I loved having the charts already made out. I would highly recommend this for others.

This strategy really works!!

My girls (ages 10 & 6) and I love using the Rubric Rules strategy to get their chores done and rooms cleaned. Before we started using this system, it was so frustrating for me to get them to do their work. They would gripe and complain and then I would think they were cleaning when actually they were playing. However, with this system, they now know exactly what is on their “to do” list and what has to be done and by what time. And if they don’t get done what is on their list by the said time there will be consequences. It did take about a month of one on one training to make sure they knew what to do and how I expected it to be done. But after that, I could just give them their list to check off and they would go get it done. No more whining and complaining or playing around. They now are proud of themselves and love to ask me to come and see how well they did.

Had A Recent Breakup? Keep Calm And Read This Review...

I've had a bad breakup (along with other depressing events within the same timeframe) in the past. It's a difficult thing to go through and honestly, just reading a book might be hard for you to do. BUT...

Reading this book could also be the best thing for you to do, even if it's hard. It's under 100 pages so that's a plus for you too.

You might have to take it slow, but as long as you get it done and internalize what you read you'll be good. Oh, and don't forget to act on the advice!

Breakups can set you back in life so the sooner you recover the better...

Read this book and let Andrew guide you through the process of recovering fully from a breakup.

Better than seeing a therapist

Useful and uplifting. Well written. Ferebee gets to the point. He is empathetic, motivational, and straight on providing a clear method for recovering and thriving after a break up. I highly recommend it to anyone going through a rough patch. I'm currently going through a divorce. This book has been great because it gives you a strategy. He asserts that your break up was for the best, and he'll tell you why. He'll bring you into a healthy mindset where you can be certain the best part of your life is yet to come. And once you are healed from the split, once you get back on your feet, you will want to read his first book: The Dating Playbook for Men.

A compelling novel outlining the sad truths of female existence in some countries while celebrating the bonds of womanhood. Refreshing to have women portrayed as strong, compassionate and supportive beings in spite of the hardships and discrimination they endure. A tribute to the search for justice in an environment where cultural and societal norms make that quest so difficult.

What a powerful story! If you are interested in history and the plight of women in Afghanistan, this book is for you. I read into the wee hours to finish this book. I literally could not put it down. I highly recommend this insightful book.

Insightful and hopeful

Really well written and intriguing from the start. It highlighted the plight of women in Afghanistan, how they are treated and how through ignorance and lack of education, society keeps them down and holds them accountable for problems that they haven't caused. In a subliminal way, it displays the absolute need for education of all in order to allow a society to progress. While the society appears backward the book does shine a glimmer of light and hope through the work of those who have returned, and through those that have stayed and received an education.

At its second edition, this social psychology book is addressed to all those who love this field and who are open enough to accept other perspectives on this field. M. Billig offers a new approach to social psychological issues. Those who are inured to social psychology work would notice from the first pages that Arguing and Thinking is not written in the "rhetoric of the discipline". This book can't be read like the others. It doesn't present graphics, charts or numbers. The technical terms are rarely used in comparison to their plenty in other books of social psychology. M. Billig places familiar social psychological issues in a rhetorical or argumentative context which raises the problem of justification and criticism. The author wants to show that social psychologists have rarely discussed the rhetorical and controversial apects of numerous subjects in social psychology. In a recuperatory approach, this book illustrates the argumentative dimension in such phenomena as attitudes, roles, categorization and cognitive consistency. M. Billig traces the connections between ancient rhetorical ideas and modern social psychology and places argumentation and arguments in the core of his approach. He invites us to make some time for Protagoras, to stop working for Aristotle and for other names that made rhetoric famous. M. Billig's work is a tribute to old books, ideas and authors discovered on the forgotten shelves of the library. Rediscovering rhetoric can be seen as a postmodern project of redeeming value. I love this book because it is a piece of fine academic achievement and it will represent, i think, a continous source of inspiration for me and for all social psychology scholars. Are You an Otherish Giver?

I've been reading this book for a few days now - finished it yesterday - and I am already finding myself changing a bit of how I operate. According to the book, I am usually a matcher - one who gives reciprocally, when I figure I can receive in return. And there isn't much wrong with that. But, according to Adam Grant and his bevy of research, otherish givers are usually the most successful.

So, let me explain.

There are three broad styles of interpersonal dealing: taking, matching, and giving. Takers are those who try to take more than they give. Matchers are those who try to give and take proportaionally and conditionally. Givers are those who give more than they take. Takers are primarily self-oriented, matchers are other-oriented as a means to being self-oriented (I'll help you when I think you will help me) and givers are primarily other-oriented.

Here's the counter-intuitive part. If we look at the most successful people - the happiest, the most likely to be promoted, etc - they are generally givers, and if we look at the least successful, they too often tend to be givers. (Takers do moderately well, but over time, few want to deal with them. Matchers do okay too.)

This book is an attempt to explain why being a giver is a good 'strategy' for success, as well as under what conditions giving is a failing 'strategy.' First, the positive: simply put, people appreciate givers and giving often makes people want to give back. Since givers help others and often put others' needs as a priority, givers often garner (without deliberately trying - AND THAT IS KEY!) a network of support from others they've helped. Want to communicate most effectively? Ask more questions to others than you give answers, ask for advice, and be aware of how you can help others. Want to bring out the best in people around you? Believe in them by recognizing and appreciating their strengths and contributions. Want to be successful? Don't think of personal relations as zero-sum games (where others can only win to the degree you lose), but positive sum games (if you win, it doesn't mean that I lose, but we can all win together).

It sounds obvious, right? But it isn't. Even when we may be givers in our personal lives, we often become matchers or takers at work. Even if the success of a giving strategy seems intuitive, it is equally intuitive that getting ahead requires receiving as much as or more than you get, spending most of your time working on things that will obviously benefit you, and not spending more time assisting others at work than getting your own stuff done. But Grant cites a growing body of research showing that giving - under the right conditions - really is the best overall 'strategy.'

Of course, I said "under the right conditions." What are those conditions? Well, for starters, one must give with some sort of purpose. Those who don't see some sort of result from their giving often burn out. (So, fundraising telemarketers burn out less when they can talk with those who their efforts have helped, and teachers burn out less when they see what their more successful students go on to do.) Also, one must give to others and things that the giver is interested in. (Volunteering for projects and to help people I care about is much easier and fun than for those I care little about.) Lastly, one must watch out not to be exploited by takers, who can often seem like givers in their agreeableness, but be exploitative in the end. (And Grant gives some good advice on how to detect real givers versus takers who are good actors.)

So, all of this is what Grant calls 'otheerish giving.' Giving selflessly versus giving a bit selfishly is, Grant writes, what ultimately separates successful from unsuccessful givers. Give, but make sure one is giving with a sense of purpose, and to people and things one cares about. Give, but not when it comes AT THE EXPENSE of one's own projects.

And this is the one area of criticism I have for Grant's otherwise well-written and VERY interesting book. He doesn't do a great job distinguishing between matchers (those who give when they think there will be something for them in return), and otherish givers (those who give selectively). .On its face, I think I have an understanding of the difference, but the ideas are very closely related.

One other small area of criticism: does it make sense to urge others to give, but then point out that giving is a good strategy to success? If one adopts giving as a strategy for success, then doesn't that mean, in a sense, that they are takers (giving because they expect to gain more than they give ultimately)? Grant warns against this tendency, telling us that giving because one expects ultimate benefits - is often a self-defeating strategy that others can detect. But, doesn't the mere fact that Grant's whole point is to show that and how giving is ultimately a winning strategy mean that many people WILL adopt it somewhat artificially because they expect a payoff? (I don't see how its avoidable.)

Anyway, I did gain a lot from this book. Not only have I found myself monitoring some of my interpersonal dealings by the advice given in this book, but it's given me insights into what working styles many of my colleagues have (which affects how I deal with them). Very good book that not only conveys some very interesting research, but should be able to give people some good and usable advice.

Oh, and as a final teaser... chapter 3 explains why Jonas Salk - typically renowned as a giver for refusing to patent his polio vaccine - is actually a taker.

How Givers Help Teams and Communities.

I'm very glad that I stumbled upon the Adam Grant's interview on the On Being radio show. This book resonated with me on many levels. There are lessons here that will help me in my roles an agile software developer, people manager, and member of my community. Grant explains how givers (as opposed to takers and matchers) get ahead in the long run and also help their teams succeed. The information here resonates with, and explains, many things I've learned from people ranging from Gerald Weinberg and Tom DeMarco to, more recently Gil Broza about technical leadership, and team dynamics. In this book you will learn how to be an effective team member, and help others to be the same. Most importantly Grant explains how to be a giver and not overextend yourself. This is was a great book to end the year with, and would be an equally good book to start the year with. As Adam Grant says, we need more givers. This book will help you to understand why that's true, how you can be a more effective giver, and how to encourage others to give, so that you can be part of a more effective team or community. This is a "business" book that will give you insights in to how to improve both your business and non-business lives.

Give and be proud

As an entrepreneur from China, I have to say this is best and most useful book I have read in the last two years! Here I am inspired to prioritize my effort in constructing my corporate culture -- recognize the individual giving tendencies of my partners and core team members before deciding how to engage their commitment to it.
I have read this book twice in the past week and have started to use the tools that it recommends to shape my own giving behaviors. Needless to say, I have already requested my core team members to read this book and we shall kick off our first study group on it at the end of this month. I intend to make it a ritual in our monthly management and strategy meeting, in the hope that our company culture will be shifted gradually in the giving direction in a top-down fashion.
By helping my colleagues and myself become otherish and sustain on it, I believe it will not only benefit our professions and our collective success, but also dramatically improve our personal relationships and life quality (especially for those of us who have long been seeking a solution to achieve the real work-life balance!).
Thank you Professor Grant for all your inspirations, as I have come to believe no matter how self-oriented we were when we first started our business, it is never too late for my team and I to train ourselves to become otherish and start doing something benefiting ourselves and the society at the same time. Determined to create a company ingrained in giving, my partners and I will make it our mission to create one of the most loving and giving companies in China.

Statics and Strength of Materials

Currently I am using this text book in a College course. If you read it carefully, you will find the structure to be carefully put togeter for self learning. It contains excellent examples and diagrams to follow. It even has programs that can be entered into "Basic" for problems solving. I think it is one of the better text books I have been exposed to.

Not The Right Book

When I saw the Statics and Strengths of Materials 4th Edition and checked the ISBN Number, The numbers match with what I needed to for my last college course. When I got the book, it turns out to be the 2nd edition of the book still written by the same authors but did not match to what I saw on the picture. Please be careful when buying from this store as you may not the right you wanted.

Great Book for Mechanical Engineers

This book is the crutch of load calculations and basic engineering problems. Our instructor has this book in his personal collection and uses the references daily. We as a class do not use sig digs but the book does. Overall an excellent book. Too bad it is no longer being printed. Get this book while it lasts.
