This Spanish translation is a very good one. Editorial Tusquets in its collection Tiempo de Memoria has published many books from other historians focused on contemporary history.

"Why the Allies Won" is an enlightening book.
Mr. Overy once again produces a solid, consistent and convincing text.
We usually assume that Germany confronted against Allies' overwhelming production capacity was doomed and condemned to lose the war.

Mr. Overy tackles this reassuring myth and scrutinizes several key issues. He does this with unfaltering logic, presenting well researched, documented and convincing facts to build his case.
He demonstrates all along his work how thin was the margin between success and defeat.

To achieve this he first analyzes four "battle scenarios": The Battle for the Seas, Stalingrad & Kursk, Bombers & Bombing and The Invasion of France.
In each scenario he describes and evaluates confronting forces, leadership and leaders, strategy, technology, production rate and whatever significant fact affected the issue.
Fortunately each chapter has appropriate maps that allow the reader to follow the evolution of the corresponding situation.

Economy and Technology are examined in separate chapters. For me one astounding fact was to learn how Germany, even if it was a militarized society, wasn't able to coordinate mass production efficiently.

Leadership and Moral also have a specific chapter each. Most interesting comparison between Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin and Hitler is carried out.

The reader may easily grasp Overy's main arguments as he uses a very terse and direct prose, and faultless logic.

This is an exceptional book that will be appreciated by different kind of readers: history aficionados, scholars and general public.

Consequently, no attempt is here made to prove that the Bible is true, as both the writer and the readers he has specially in view take that for granted. People who are bothered by doubts along that line may find abundant help elsewhere, as there are not wanting plenty of good books, written by sound Christian scholars, that present unanswerable arguments for the inerrancy and the divine authority of the Bible. The trouble is that so many people who profess to want help along these lines are too indifferent to investigate, even when the opportunity is put before them. It is of really earnest seekers after the truth that I am thinking. For many months I was myself in much doubt and confusion of thought until God by His Holy Spirit showed me through His Word the true ground of peace. That was many years ago, and as I write I find myself living over again the conflict of those days, and recalling, as though it were but yesterday, the gladness that filled my soul when I rested in Christ alone, and entered into a lasting peace with God that has known no disturbance throughout the years. The clouds may at times veil my sky. Sorrows and difficulties may try my soul. New discoveries of the corruption of my own heart may bring humiliation and repentance. But this peace with God remains unchanged, for it rests not on me, not on my frames of mind or experiences, but on the finished work of Christ and the testimony of the Word of God, of which it is written: “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.”

About the Author
Henry Allen "Harry" Ironside (October 14, 1876 – January 15, 1951) was a Canadian-American Bible teacher, preacher, theologian, pastor, and author. Ironside was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to John and Sophia (Stafford) Ironside, who were both active in the Plymouth Brethren. At birth, Harry was thought to be dead, so the attending nurses focused their attention on Sophia, who was dangerously ill. Only when a pulse was detected in Harry, 40 minutes later, was an attempt made to resuscitate the infant. When Harry was two years old, his father, John, died of typhoid, at the age of 27. From a very early age, Ironside showed a strong interest in evangelical Christianity and was active in the Salvation Army as a teenager before later joining the "Grant" section of the Plymouth Brethren. A few months after he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Helen died on May 1, 1948. Ironside resigned as pastor of Moody Church on May 30 and retired to Winona Lake, Indiana. On October 9, 1949, he married Annie Turner Hightower, of Thomaston, Georgia, who became his constant companion. He suffered from failing vision, and after surgery to restore it, he set out on November 2, 1950, for a preaching tour of New Zealand, once more among Brethren assemblies, but died in Cambridge, New Zealand, on Jan 15, 1951 and was buried in Purewa Cemetery, Auckland. Theological influence Along with others such as Cyrus Scofield, he was influential in popularizing dispensationalism among Protestants in North America. Despite his lack of formal education, his tremendous mental capacity, photographic memory and zeal for his beliefs caused him to be called, "the Archbishop of Fundamentalism." Ironside was one of the most prolific Christian writers of the 20th Century and published more than eighty books and pamphlets, a number of which are still in print. He also wrote the popular hymn Overshadowed. One editorial reviewer wrote of a 2005 republication that, "Ironside's commentaries are a standard and have stood the test of time."

An enlightenment.

I find this book quite a read. I appreciate that this book has combined the Law of Attraction and the concept of Manifestation. It is profound. And what is even better is that the book has been made for beginners, like me. I have read some books about the Law of Attraction, but never really understood what it is or how it works. This book made things clearer. And another thing worth mentioning is that this book made it clear why some people are still failing in their attempt to use the Law of Attraction and what they might be doing wrong. Indeed, when you put all your best, the universe will conspire to make you achieve what you want. This book is an enlightenment.

How can I reject it?

I find this book an inspiring reading experience. Well, books about the Law of Attraction always are, but this book has given me something more. It has given so much encouragement on how one can try to manifest and use the Law of Attraction. And I think that everything is worth a try. I will be sure to read every now and then..

When you want something and you work hard for it, the universe will conspire to make it happen.... Or something like that. That is what I've read before. But then reading this book has given me a different perspective. It made me understand the Law of Attraction more and how one can use it in order to get the things he desires in life. And to quote the author:

Well written and thoroughly researched book on the end times.

Finally a book that answered so many of my questions about the end times! I have an open mind about end times ideas, so for me this book was refreshing as it offered a lot of explanations about the end times that I haven't read before. Those heavily `married' to other end times theories that this book doesn't adhere to of course might disagree with some of the points, but to me it is important that the ideas are backed up, and I found the explanations solidly supported and very credible (for example, the Biblical exegesis tool called Typology is explained and used).

The book very concisely breezes through Church history and then focuses on the twentieth century and along the way subtly blows holes in theories of a fourth secret of Fatima and its consecration not being done. As I read along, the book casually (almost nonchalantly, even) but convincingly explained the deeper meanings behind the Fatima apparition and provided answers to typical end times terms like the thousand years, the `short time of Satan' that comes at the end, the great tribulation and how it is cut short, that ever cryptic phrase `time, times, and a half time' (yes!), the Gospel being preached to the world, the coming of Elijah before Jesus returns, the final apostasy, the sign of the Son of Man in the sky - all of these end times issues and more were explained in a way that made perfect sense. The author even very cautiously offered speculation on upcoming key dates in Salvation History. Best of all, I am a Christian so I appreciate how it is not based on things like the Mayan calendar but leans instead on Sacred Scripture and (private) apparitions. I found it all very credible and I think it is a must read for those who are curious about the end times and just where we are on that timeline. After finishing the book and reflecting on it, I slowly realized I had been provided a lot of rock solid explanations to so many baffling end times questions, and I also came to realize how everything in the book had been seamlessly tied together to provide a cohesive picture of what is going on in these times. And seeing where we are in the end times, I feel I need to focus more on being a better Christian starting right now.

The best part (to me anyway)? I liked how the meaning of that mysterious phrase of Blessed Mary at Garabandal, "Three more popes and it will be the end of the times but not the end of the world" is given and now it finally makes sense! I have wondered about that for years!

And I have at times wondered why, if Blessed Mary said Satan was given one century, the twentieth, to test the Church, why does his time apparently continue even now, when that century is over? That mystery is resolved too! Five stars all the way!

A while longer
By Just an average mom.
It should be called Not Much Longer. I couldn't put it down. This is not a book of fluff. There obviously has been a lot of research and prayer put into this book. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Book of Revelation and Our Lady's messages. Don't wait to read this one.

Great supplement to my classroom instruction. The menu was tricky to navigate at first, but once I practiced I was fluent and never lost class time. Students are fascinated by the real footage. The sound quality is good and it is easy to hear the people speak beautiful French.

In 1928, a 20-something Renaissance man named Manly Hall self-published a vast encyclopedia of the occult, believing that "modern" ideas of progress and materialism were displacing more important and ancient modes of knowledge. Hall's text has become a classic reference, dizzying in its breadth: various chapters explore Rosicrucianism, Kabbalah, alchemy, cryptology, Tarot, pyramids, the Zodiac, Pythagorean philosophy, Masonry and gemology, among other topics. This affordably priced edition would be vastly improved by a new foreword, placing the work in some kind of historical and critical context and introducing readers to the basic contours of Hall's sweeping corpus. Instead, we have a disciple's adulatory 1975 foreword, which merely parrots the same themes of mystery and esoterica that are espoused in the book. Readers who are unfamiliar with Hall's work will be at a loss in ferreting out which chapters have stood the test of time and which have been vigorously debunked (like the one on Islam, which actually uses novelist Washington Irving as a primary source on the prophet Muhammad). However, they will also marvel at the sheer scope of Hall's research and imagination, and at J. Augustus Knapp's famous illustrations, including a 16-page color insert.

"A masterful summation of the esoteric teachings of the ages."

Mystical speculations about God, the world, and man occupied the minds of many medieval scholars and theologians. They conceived creation itself to be a symbol or figure through which the Divine Will manifested its purposes and intentions-thus by analogy, the world revealed God, and man revealed the world. The human being himself was a microcosm-a miniature of the cosmos. After the collapse of the pagan cultural institutions, it was unlawful to teach classical learning or to advance scientific knowledge contrary to the prevailing scholasticism. To avoid persecution and at the same time perpetuate for the benefit of qualified disciples the more advanced formulas of the ancient wisdom, the sacred truths were presented symbolically through the beautiful engraved devices of the emblem writers.

The seventeenth century restoration of learning gradually brought about a Universal Reformation as proclaimed in the Fama of the Rosicrucians. A careful study of the emblem books of that period reveals that most of the figures and designs were based upon Egyptian or Greek mythology, and like the alchemical symbols, perpetuated the secret teachings of esoteric fraternities. Today, those well informed in the Orphic Mysteries and the mystical speculations of the Neoplatonists can interpret the design with little difficulty. It appears that the emblem books were, in many cases, actual extensions of Pythagorean and Platonic metaphysics. Paracelsus said that the first hieroglyphic book is nature, published in folio, and the second hieroglyphic book is man, published in duodecimo.

To live in the world without becoming aware of the meaning of the world is like wandering about in a great library without touching the books. It has always seemed to me that symbolism should be restored to the structure of world education. The young are no longer invited to seek the hidden truths, dynamic and eternal, locked within the shapes and behavior of living beings.

The present volume is itself a symbol made up of many symbols gathered from rare sources. It invites the thoughtful reader to explore the meanings of these emblems and devices with his own insight. Because spiritual growth is the goal of all human aspiration, symbols that help us to grow are precious things for they open the doors to life everlasting.

I wish to express my deep indebtedness to those faithful artists and engravers whose remarkable meditation pictures have guided my labors for so many years. This book is dedicated to the truths they served and the wonderful designs which they have bestowed as a priceless heritage upon the truth seekers of the future. It is my sincere hope that this memorial may continue to serve and inspire new generations of kindly and dedicated people.

Be sure to get the "Reduced Size Color" edition if you are looking for a paperback version.

If you're reading this review, then you already know about Manly P. Hall, so I won't get into that.

The best edition to get is the hardcover University Edition printed in 2008. BUT if you want a cheaper paperback, make sure you get the authorized 2000 reduced facsimile of the 1988 Diamond Jubilee edition from the Philosophical Research Society (PRS). It's the only edition in print that is a true reprint of the original typography and illustrations in their correct places. All other editions are re-typeset, and some cluster all the color illustrations together rather than at the beginning of each chapter where they belong. The Reduced Facsimile is also the only edition that was authorized by Hall when he was still alive, and the only edition that contains ALL the original illustrations.

The 2000 edition from PRS is very good quality with a sewn signature binding printed on heavy photo paper. DON'T get the Dover edition or the "Readers" edition!! Much of the value in this text is the beautiful typography and illustrations. It's not worth owning it otherwise. A cheap used copy of the facsimile edition can be easily found for under $10. I got mine for $2.99 and it's beautiful.

Do not buy this edition.

I perused an older hardcover copy of this book at a lodge brother's house and was so impressed, I ordered it on the spot.

It was full of full page color plates and numerous illustrations. I immediately deemed it a necessary component of my library.

I received my copy today, and there isn't a single illustration or plate that the version I looked at had.

Since it is a book on symbolism, symbols would be a nice addition.

My advice would be to try and find an older edition.

Grade 1-3 There is no arguing the rich con tributions and enduring popularity of both Dr. Seuss and James Stevenson in the world of children's literature. Despite (or, perhaps, because of) their individual cre dentials, I Am Not Going to Get Up Today is a disappointment. The story of a little boy who refuses to get out of bed holds promise, but Dr. Seuss' rhymes are un even and forced, lacking the natural ca dence and choice of terms so necessary for the success of a beginning reader for mat. Stevenson's identifiable watercolor and ink illustrations are loose and fluid but border on messy. There is not a positive meshing of text and illustration in this book; readers never get the feeling that they belong together. All factors combine to make this book less than satisfying. Enjoyable but not classic

It's really a fun book to read. The illustrations aren't by Seuss so I'm assuming this is probably one he'd never intended to publish. But it's out there now. And you've got your 1 star reviewers up in arms because the kid gets to stay in bed. OH NO! (Screams the logical person) a kid gets to sleep in? How terrible.
I read a review by a "working parent" (congratulations on being a part of the group known as everybody) who was so upset that it seems this book will derail her whole life. I think a little good parenting would prevent that. Plus, as a working parent it's kinda nice when the kids want to sleep in. It gives you a little down time. Was it the best Seuss book? No. Was it fun? Yes. Was it illustrated by Seuss? No. 3 stars.

Fun for Princesses

This is an activity book. There is a story that flows through the book alongside activities where girls can cut, color, draw, and glue. There is also a little notebook in the front cover, which both my kids loved.

The activities are definitely for kids ages 6 and up that can work independently. Some of the activities require some adult help, but most of them can be done without assistance. These are fun activities for any aspiring princess!

Under-appreciated masterpieces

Having grown up in that part of the world, I remember as a child being taken to "spomeniks" on school field trips. It is only as an adult that I have come to appreciate their artistic content and stunning beauty. They stand as commemoration to the all too many lost in war's fury, as reminders of the terrible toll that wars have taken in the Balkans. And yet they offer hope, showing that humans are capable of sublime expression in the face of immense tragedy. I applaud Jan Kempenaers's aesthetic vision, but lament that he has chosen to marginalize the authors of these masterpieces by treating them only as visual objects. But most of all, I lament that they stand in silent ruin today when their message is so desperately needing to be heard.

So close, but yet so far

The photos are glorious, but there is NO story behind the sculptures/memorials...no brief bit of history, nada. I was hugely disappointed. There REALLY needs to be an addendum to the book that actually talks about these things. As it is, it's just a collection of "the greatest hits" of each piece. I'm sure he has many different views. It would have been good to see more than one angle.

In short, the idea is fantastic. It just wasn't taken NEARLY far enough...and now that it's been done once, I doubt anyone will redo it, and do it properly.

Wonderful, spooky stuff

Buried in the back of this book, in fine print, is a detailed one-page explanation of how these monuments came to be. There is no mention of what they mean individually, and most of them look like they were built by aliens having a love affair with concrete. I don't buy photo books, but I saw this man's photos of spomeniks in a gallery, and I couldn't forget them. Finally I broke down and bought this book. I didn't regret it. I don't think you will, either.

Madawi Al-Rasheed is Professor of Anthropology of Religion at King's College, London. She specialises in Saudi history, politics, religion and society. Her recent publications include Contesting the Saudi State (2007) and Kingdom without Borders (2008).

Fresh Perspective on Nation/State building

The Saud family is the monarchy, which is the state, of Saudi Arabia. This book shows how that state of affairs came to be.

I found the material on the 1930s especially illuminating, because it provides us with a picture of the Saud family, and to a degree a picture of Arabia, before the rest of the world came to appreciate the strategic significance of petroleum, and before the Second World War made all national boundaries something up for negotiation and renegotiation.

We're also treated to an illuminating dicussion of when marriages (and by extension polygamy) is, and when it isn't, a valuable tool for the forging of political alliances. This is an analytical take on a subject usually rushed through with cliches.

Good with a couple of failings

Before reading this book, I knew little about the history of Saudi Arabia. After reading it, I know a lot. So the book definitely served its purpose. But there are a few weaknesses that I must mention:

1) The book is definitely written in an academic style. As an academic myself, I can appreciate that. But for a more casual reader, this fact might be somewhat off putting.
2) Perhaps this comment is a continuation of the first, but why must Arabic words be so heavily emphasized? Do so when there is no English word but come on, a phrase such as "... the head of the royal court (diwan), who was appointed as clerk (amin sir)." verges on showing off.
3) The first 7 chapters were written for a 2002 edition; the 2010 edition adds two new chapters. But it seems as if the author did nothing to revise the first chapters. For instance, the old Chapter 6 says about Bin Laden's blame for the 9-11 attacks that "... hard evidence remains at this point very elusive." Probably in 2002 this statement would have been acceptable. But for a book copyrighted in 2010, the statement is ludicrous. When updating to a new edition, checking everything is a good idea.
4) Chapters 7 and 8 show the author looking at very current events (ie, for Chapter 7 current in 2002 and for Chapter 8 current in 2008) and vastly overstating their importance. In particular, not every small London-based group and not every proclamation of the king will be crucially significant. Mentioning these without going into detail is a good idea, at least until the group or proclamation has proven to be important.

While I have mentioned 4 flaws, I still liked the book quite a lot, hence its high rating. If you are looking for a good history of Saudi Arabia from 1900 to 2000, this is a book to consider. It's a little weaker on the period before 1900 and after 2000.

al-Rasheed's book is a well researched and beautifully written study of the making of modern Saudi society ...

I found this book to be the most informative and concise introduction to modern Saudi Arabia currently available. I lived and worked in the Kingdom in the late 2000s during which time I read most of what had been recently published. Much of what was available was written by western journalists with only a very superficial understanding of culture, politics and economy of KSA and much seemed to be aimed at satisfying the market for sensational anecdotes of their short "bungee jumps" into the region. Ms. al-Rasheed's book is a well researched and beautifully written study of the making of modern Saudi society and its role in the region.
