This Spanish translation is a very good one. Editorial Tusquets in its collection Tiempo de Memoria has published many books from other historians focused on contemporary history.
"Why the Allies Won" is an enlightening book.
Mr. Overy once again produces a solid, consistent and convincing text.
We usually assume that Germany confronted against Allies' overwhelming production capacity was doomed and condemned to lose the war.
Mr. Overy tackles this reassuring myth and scrutinizes several key issues. He does this with unfaltering logic, presenting well researched, documented and convincing facts to build his case.
He demonstrates all along his work how thin was the margin between success and defeat.
To achieve this he first analyzes four "battle scenarios": The Battle for the Seas, Stalingrad & Kursk, Bombers & Bombing and The Invasion of France.
In each scenario he describes and evaluates confronting forces, leadership and leaders, strategy, technology, production rate and whatever significant fact affected the issue.
Fortunately each chapter has appropriate maps that allow the reader to follow the evolution of the corresponding situation.
Economy and Technology are examined in separate chapters. For me one astounding fact was to learn how Germany, even if it was a militarized society, wasn't able to coordinate mass production efficiently.
Leadership and Moral also have a specific chapter each. Most interesting comparison between Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin and Hitler is carried out.
The reader may easily grasp Overy's main arguments as he uses a very terse and direct prose, and faultless logic.
This is an exceptional book that will be appreciated by different kind of readers: history aficionados, scholars and general public.
