This book was short, simple, and to the point. Written for non-engineering technicians, this book perfectly explains the basic theory, design, and operation of ion exchange systems - primarily water deionization.
It the newest revision the author has added a troubleshooting section as well as a technical reference section dealing with unit conversions and acid/base concentration conversions.
For those who wish to get a little more in depth knowledge there is a reference section which points you to various scientific papers written on the subject as well as several college level text books.

About the Author
RICHARD SMITTEN is a full-time author and trader who resides in New Orleans, Louisiana. He holds a BA in English from the University of Western Ontario. As executive vice president of MTS International, he oversaw personnel on North Sea oil rigs, the nose cone design of the Dassault Mirage jet fighter, and security for the then newly discovered Nigerian oil fields. He also worked for the Vick Chemical Company where he was marketing director of the Canadian division. In 1998, Mr. Smitten became interested in Jesse Livermore, and began researching the man and his methodologies. In 2003, he founded Stock Market Solutions, a firm that teaches traders the "Jesse Livermore Trading System" (for more information, see www.stockmarketsolutions.org). Smitten is the author of numerous books, including Jesse Livermore: World’s Greatest Stock Trader, The Godmother, Capital Crimes, and Legal Tender.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME & MONEY ON THIS BOOK!!!

If you thought you would learn the actual methods of how Jesse Livermore traded, you are WRONG.

Gives a quick outline of how Livermore traded, like 'pivotal points' but teaches you NOTHING about how to apply them.

Illustrations are very poor, just a few trend lines which any newbie could have drawn straight out from stockcharts.com

The only moderatesly useful point may have been the emphasis of the 'time stop' where Livermore states that if the stock doesn't react in a few days, get out.

The "Livermore Secret Market Key" was a total scam, once again showing and teaching you NOTHING.

Repeats about 1/4 of the book in the summary by directly cutting and pasting.

If you would like to learn more of Livermore's methods, go read Reminescences of a Stock Operator.

I'd rather have read that one more time than waste my time and money on this book. Huge buyer's remorse!

Do not waste your money.

If you read Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, then you know Livermore's rules. As for the secret trading method (Smitten calls Pivotal Point Trading).... it boils down to trendlines. That is it. The book is so similar to the books of William ONeill I was expecting an IBD subscription card to fall out: 1. Watch the top industry groups for market signals. 2. Watch the top two stocks in each market group. 3. Cut losses at 10% (IBD is 8%). 4. Watch for volume to be up at least 50%. 5. Do not average down. 6. Buy on breakouts to new highs. etc, etc, etc.

its just like the books by smitten

i have read all of richard smittens books about jesse livermore. they are all very much the same. they have identical passages in different order. the trade like jesse livermore i reckon is the best or 2nd best after how to trade in stocks - due to the flow/order. i reckon first read reminiscences of a stock operator and then one of richards smittens books. richards smittens books is also about 60% repititive to reminiscences of a stock operator which i think is okay

A novel but effective approach

When I agreed to write an honest review in exchange for a copy of Merrick Rosenberg's "The Chameleon" I had no idea what to expect. Upon glancing at it I became aware that it had to do with personality types and how people of different types can learn to work effectively. At first I was a bit skeptical of the approach taken by the author. The book consists of a series of "fables," vignettes that feature four different species of birds, each of which represents a personality type. The first bird is Ivory the parrot. She is fun-loving, sociable, and lives in the moment. At the opposite extreme is Carl the owl, who is scheduled and organized and seemingly does everything by the book. These two are like oil and water, in that Carl cannot abide Ivory's almost total lack of a schedule and her unwillingness to follow instructions to the letter. Dee, the eagle, is the broad-picture person. Like Carl, she wants things done her way, but unlike Carl, she is not detail oriented but instead is often grandiose. Finally, Simon the dove is kindhearted and others-centered, concerned with the welfare of those around him. Along with these four birds are two chameleons, Xenia, the teacher, and her student, Xandu. From time to time they step into the conflicts that arise between these birds and impart understanding of how these birds can solve their conflicts by better understanding each other.

Altogether there are some 20 fables, classified by seasons of the year. At first I wasn't sure that the author would be able to impart any really serious insight through this approach. But as I read through a few of them I began to see how cleverly Rosenberg has woven in the lessons he wants to impart. And before long I started recognizing myself and others in the interactions between these birds. By the end of the book I was convinced that this could be a very good approach to encouraging more positive relations between different personalities, whether at home, at the office, at school, or elsewhere, and how this method could be used in team building.

The process is also aided by a section following each fable entitled "Chameleon Wisdom." In it Rosenberg applies the lessons in the fable just covered to show how those lessons can aid people with different personality types in understanding each other. This in turn is followed by several "Tips," very brief pointers that summarize the main takeaways from each fable.

By the time I had finished the book I was convinced that the method Rosenberg uses in this book (and in his workshops/seminars) is sheer genius.

Life Changing Philosophy by Merrick Rosenberg

Merrick Rosenberg's book, The Chameleon, Life-Changing Wisdom for Anyone with a Personality or Knows Someone Who Does,
is a book which could give you a new perspective on yourself, your family, and the people in your life (whether you work with them or just deal with them). This book has a lot of charm along with a steady hand on its subject. It uniquely bases its story on a series of fables. The star is a Chameleon, Xenia, and her student, little Xandu, who impart a lot of learning to a series of birds in a forest where they all live. There are eagles, who represent the determined personality, there are doves, who represent the kindness and gentleness which some people naturally have, there are owls, who are organized and conscientious, and there are parrots, life-loving and sociable.
The book begins in the forest in the first season: Spring. Each season will be covered and five fables per season will teach us new lessons about how to be the most understanding people we can possibly be. If a bird can represent you as a personality, you will see it illustrated here. Some of us are more than one personality type but that is to be expected.
Another thing the reader will learn is that his or her viewpoint is not necessarily the only way of seeing things. This book, which is an excellent guidebook for people in business, will assist us to understand our personalities. If you are an direct and strongminded "eagle", and someone in your office is a softhearted "dove, you are not going to get too far ordering them around from your point of view. You are going to have to shift positions and see what it is like to be a dove before you pass judgement. Understanding plays a big part in this book.
The book's major characters, the Chameleon and her young companion, serve to expand our understanding on how to perceive differences between who we are and others. In each section, there are chapters with fables. At the end of each fable, there will be a quote called, "Chameleon Wisdom". One of my favorites was from Robert A. Heinlein, and another was from George Bernard Shaw. Steve Jobs is in there, too.
There is no absence of humor in this book, nor is there any absence of compassion, however if you wish to understand the fine line between adapting to your situation and attempting to get your situation to adapt to you, this gentle-hearted book (which ultimately pulls no punches) may just become the wind under your wings.

I appreciated the tidbit of chameleon wisdom that was part of each chapter.

The author, a keynote speaker. entrepreneur and thought leader on personality styles, makes the concept of DISC Behavior Analysis come alive through 22 entertaining fables. He does so by having an all-knowing chameleon guide an eagle, parrot, dove and owl through a journey that you'll also be able to relate to your own life.

I especially liked his description of something called the Home Rule; i.e., treat others how they need to be treated.

In addition, I appreciated the tidbit of chameleon wisdom that was part of each chapter; e.g., this from Pema Chodron:
If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.

Lastly, I thought Rosenberg was spot on when discussing creativity and in making this statement:
The only difference between creative people and uncreative people is that creative people understand how to express their creativity.

As he did with each chapter, he then concluded with a series of useful tips--including:
KNOW THAT YOU ARE CREATIVE. Even if you feel you haven't created anything in a while, you are more imaginative than you think you are. The capacity for creativity resides within you.

IDENTIFY AND ALTER disempowering beliefs about your creativity.

And:
DO THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU, and share your creativity with the world.

How would you define an intimate consumer relationship?

I like to think of it as a romance -- a relationship in which both parties are dependent upon one another. The consumer relies on the brand's functional, emotional, and social benefits, and the brand relies on the consumer's loyalty and word-of-mouth to praise the brand to friends, family, and colleagues.

What makes customers fall in love with brands?

Consumers must feel like a brand is truly designed for them as a "brand for me." The brand has to meet their needs, and the brand's personality has to be appealing enough to inspire a sense of attachment. As marketers, we must treat our consumer like we would treat a prospective girlfriend or boyfriend. We need to make them feel special, create a meaningful experience with them every time we interact, and communicate honestly and often.

Why is the context in which we "meet" a branded product or service important?

"Meeting memorably" is incredibly important! If the consumer's first encounter isn't an impressive experience, it is unlikely that the consumer will return to the brand. Think about your own relationships. For you to have any ongoing interest in someone else, something about that individual has to connect during the initial meeting, or else why would you bother spending any more time together?

Is an emotionally-based relationship with the consumer possible for any product?

Yes! There are only so many functional benefits that a category can have--in many cases, the only way you can differentiate your brand from competition is emotionally. Your consumer might be using your brand for a functional reason, but that doesn't mean the brand isn't doing something to touch their emotions. We are emotional people and view our world through an emotional lens.

What is the first step marketers should take to begin building a deep relationship with consumers?

Know that brands are not just for the Coca-Colas and the P&Gs of the world. Every business, big or small, is a brand, or has brands. Now topping my list of recommended books on branding ...

I read a lot of branding books. And I'm constantly asked by colleagues, clients and students for recommendations on what books they should read to get an overview of branding. That very short list typically includes "Brand Simple," "The Brand Gap" and "ZAG." Now when they ask, I'm going to suggest "Romancing the Brand." I like the way Tim Halloran uses the very appropriate metaphor of the brand as a relationship and takes the reader through the brand development process, from positioning to making emotional connections to building the relationship to (when necessary) repositioning. And the book is well-written. He has a very readable style, using interesting case studies to bring the definitions of branding tactics to life vs. sounding like a text book. For someone wanting to learn more about branding, I highly recommend "Romancing the Brand."

The Real Thing

There are a lot of books written about brand strategy and identity, but Tim Halloran has crafted a gem of a new book with Romancing the Brand. He quickly gets to his key point: that customers establish and build relationships with their brands like they do with other people. As a former Coke brand guy, Tim brings a real-world point of view from his experience. Everyone in business should be able to learn important lessons from one of the greatest brands ever created. Romancing the Brand is a fast read, with lots a new, important stories…including revealing what really happened with New Coke, usually considered one of the greatest fails in business history. But, the real story is not what you've been told; I was surprised because I thought I knew the real story. If you are in leadership, marketing, brand development, advertising or just love business, order Romancing the Brand. It's the real thing.

A must-see if you want a deep understanding of kinetic art !

Great description of the works and techniques of Kinetic artists, very useful to understand their creation process and what they were looking for through their art, explained by the artists themselves.
The content of this book is divided into the different art forms : pictures, sculptures, electronic systems, and finally a selection of several discussions and articles on other subjects related to kinetic art, like the use of sound, or holography for example.
Highly recommended if you want to know more about this artistic movement.

Optical kinetic art

This is an older book now, but does seem to be the best source of information on early light and optical artworks. It is certainly dated, but I don't know of any newer work in this area.
