About the Author
Sheldon Knoespel currently teaches chemistry part time at Jackson Community College in Jackson, Michigan. He also serves as a science education instructor at Michigan State University and site coordinator for the Michigan Science Olympiad state tournament. Sheldon has also served as one of the committee members for the Laboratory Practical section of the American Chemical Society's United States National Chemistry Olympiad Exam. Previously Sheldon was employed with the MSU Department of Chemistry where he was Chemical Demonstrator for fourteen years. Prior to that he taught at Olivet High School, Olivet, Michigan, where he taught all of the physical sciences, including AP Chemistry, for more than twenty years.

Tina Ohn-Sabatello has been teaching honors and AP Chemistry for sixteen years at Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. Each year, her students achieve mostly 4's and 5's on the AP Chemistry exam. She also has taught for five summer terms at Triton Community College. Tina has B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was one of five members of the SAT II Chemistry Test Development Committee. During her five-year term working for ETS, she wrote and revised chemistry questions for the subject matter test with one other high school teacher, three college professors, and two ETS consultants.

Gordon Morlan taught chemistry for forty years; the last twenty years included AP Chemistry. He served as Science Department Chairman at Grosse Pointe North High School in Michigan for twenty-nine years. Gordon was also a College Board consultant and was a reader for the AP Chemistry Examination twelve times. He is an active competitive sailor and also enjoys reading, travel, and jazz.

The Stars Know

While the book is available free on line I prefer to hold it, underline it and carry it around. This is an introduction to the fact that groups on earth are influenced by the movements of the planets. While this is generally disregarded by most investors and traders. All who disregard it have not studied the subject. Even those that have studied the subject get it wrong as they do not have a background in trading. Those that follow Elliot wave will be surprised to see that there is a relationship with the planets. The greatest trader in history was an astrologer. W D Gann and his primary method of long term forcasting was astrology.

Louise McWhirter' s Little Gem

Without doubt this contribution to the subject of Financial Astrology is a must have. Written over a 7 year period and released in 1938 Louise McWhirter has produced an exceptionally well written treatise on her findings and for what has been recognised as the most accurate stock market forecasting system ever devised/discovered.

This publication is a must have for any serious student of Financial Astrology.

There are two dimensions to trading, Price which is expressed vertically in a market chart, and Time which is the horizontal axis. McWhirter's work deals not only with the general waveform highs and lows of Price but tells you where these highs and lows will manifest in Time. This book is most useful for people wanting to know from when the markets will typically manifest their highs and lows, or those waiting for the right time to buy or sell real estate. If you're in your 20'sor 30's and beginning to invest for retirement or plan for buying a home, this is a book that gives you an advantage, a far better shot at retiring in your 60's without counting on Social Security being there as your primary income.

McWhirter's work dates back to the 1930's and continues to show how financial market cycles continue relatively exclusive from the government and the Federal Reserve. The author doesn't embellish or obfuscate, or promote a political point of like many other books by Financial Astrologers - quite the opposite. She illustrates how business cycles operate regardless of who occupies the White House. This is truly useful, information you can summarize while reading into a few handwritten pages, ready for reference in trading. Occam's Razor applies here, as this elegantly simple explanation of astronomical factors and their effect on the markets continues as truth. I know this as I've been a Financial Astrologer for 15 years, and this book has proven itself. It is a basic part of my trading strategy.

If you're not an astrologer, you'll need to buy at least one more book what's known as an Geocentric Ephemeris so you can look up in the tables where the planets and the Moon's Node are located in the calendar. No future for corporation kids

This is a collection of essays on the theme that childhood is a creation of society and today it is the corporations who are constructing childhood.Topics examined include Disney movies,"educational" television,Beavis and Butthead,video games,television wrestling, Barbie, and Macdonald's.Children are shamelessly being exploited for profit with no consideration for their welfare.Graphic violence and sexism is promoted in many video games.The writers want to expose the hypocrisy and exploitation of the corporations who have taken over the minds of children.Macdonald's promotes a family friendly image, yet employees have to put the company well ahead of family interests.Never have a generation of children been subject to such intense exploitation, as this book shows.The writers hope that more parents and teachers question what is being done to the kids.

This book belongs on any educator's bookshelf as it is one of the few texts that looks critically at how social media affects children and child psychology. It also inspired me to read works by one of its many contributors, including Henry Giroux.

A disappointment

The subject matter appears almost random. The flow of the text is rambling and the reader is left searching for a consistent theme. There are a few bright spots in which the reader is a has a "that's interesting" moment, but these are all too few and mostly the consistent question the reader has in mind while reading is "where is this heading?". The prose is pleasant, but overall the book is disappointing.

An essential purchase for all TVD fans

I have been a HUGE fan of this show ever since I started watching it last September, but as I live in Ireland I had to download the episodes each week as they aired in the US. I have since watched each of them five times and absolutely love everything about the show as a whole. IMO it's the best new TV show since 'LOST'.

As soon as I heard there was going to be a companion book to the show I just had to purchase it and I am SO happy I did. This book is FANTASTIC and I have read it several times since receiving it. There is a Season 1 episode guide, but unlike many guides that just say what happens in each episode, this goes directly into the heart of everything and details what the consequences of each character's actions will be, which I find REALLY interesting, as it really gets you thinking.

The cast itself has been perfectly chosen and there is also a section of the book that's devoted to the actors and actresses as well as the show's creators, Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec and even L.J. Smith, who wrote the source material that the show is based on.

I really hope there will be a similar book published for Season 2 and please don't let the word 'Unofficial' on the cover put you off purchasing this, as it's truly a must-buy for all fans of the show.

This volume on Season 4 has so much more in-depth information on the episodes, the creators, the directors, the actors, the behind-the-scenes activities that help put the show together, the music, - and I'm barely scratching the surface of what's in this book. If you love TVD you'll want this book. It will enrich your experience of Season 4 tremendously.

A "MUST-READ" FOR THE TRUE VAMPIRE DIARIES FAN!

I was overjoyed to add Crissy Calhoun's latest Love You To Death: The Unofficial Companion to The Vampire Diaries to my collection. For this installment, she was joined by fellow authoress Heather Vee, co-owner of vampire-diaries.net. The pair did a fabulous job `dissecting' Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries television show, with wonderful insights of their own, plus incomparable snippets from the showrunners, writers, directors, editors, cinematographers, music supervisors, cast--it's like the CLIFF Notes and Encyclopedia BritFANGnia of TVD all rolled into one!

I simply cannot do without this book when marathoning the episodes as soon as the yearly DVD set hits the market. I especially enjoyed the TVD staff commentary scattered throughout--you can really `see' where some of the ingenious plot twists and epic visuals get their inspiration from! Besides breaking down each and every episode in depth, there are also ingenious comparisons as to the origins of some of the fractured history that make up the basis for each episode, the episode titles, references to history and literature that were drawn on--so many times things that never occurred to you as a viewer! I love how every book in this series compares `where we've been' to `where we are now' in the big scheme of TVD. Any viewer/reader that's also a history buff will revel in the detailed `real world' events that may have inspired certain scenes and events in our characters' lives. There are also sections devoted entirely to the questions that may or may not have occurred to you during the season, as well as some of those `uncertain' events that may not exactly mesh (for the moment) with what we've seen.

These books aren't designed to `recap' the episodes, rather to enhance your thoughts as an avid watcher of the show, and spark some thoughtful contemplation for the future. Since I personally have seen every episode multiple times by the time this must-have piece of literature arrives, I don't necessarily read each chapter right after watching an episode--but that would be a great way to do it for folks just starting this book series! And you simply MUST get each edition of LYTD for every season!

One of my favorite new additions this season was the music list, by scene, that the ladies researched and included--any rabid watcher also LOVES the music used in the world of TVD, and some of the obscure new artists may just make your play list permanently!

I have ALWAYS loved the timeline section near the end of the book--this is REALLY where the Encyclopedia BritFANGnia comes in. You have no idea how many arguments I've settled as to who-did-what-to-who-when just using Crissy's dates and timeline information. Sure saves all that searching with the Fast Forward button!

Novelist and biographer Ackroyd (The Plato Papers; T.S. Eliot; etc.) offers a huge, enthralling "biography" of the city of London. The reader segues through this litany of lists and anthology of anecdotes via the sketchiest of topical linkages, but no matter not a page is dull, until brief closing chapters in which Ackroyd succumbs to bathos, for which he's instantaneously redeemed by the preceding chapters. He admits to using no original research, openly crediting his printed sources. Ackroyd examines London from its pre-history through today, artfully selecting, organizing and pacing stories, and rendering the past in witty and imaginative ways. "The opium quarter of Limehouse," he tells readers, for example, "is now represented by a Chinese take-away." Fast food, it seems, was always part of the London scene. When poet Thomas Southey asked a pastry cook why she kept her shop open in the worst weather, she told him that otherwise she would lose business, "so many were the persons who took up buns or biscuits as they passed by and threw their pence in, not allowing themselves time to enter." Ackroyd covers unrest and peace, fires and ruins, river and rail transport, crime and punishment, wealth and poverty, markets and churches, uncontrolled growth and barely controlled filth. If there is a hero among the throngs, it may be engineer Joseph Bazalgette, who in 1855 began building 1,265 miles of sewers to contain the Stygian odor of progress and keep the huge, ugly metropolis livable. Biographer/novelist Ackroyd (e.g., The Life of Thomas Moore) offers a sweeping, highly readable account of London's colorful and complicated history. In encyclopedic detail, he discusses everything from the city's crime and its theater to the notorious fog, plagues, and Great Fire of 1666, from which the city had to be almost built. He also provides a useful travelog, discussing London's many notable buildings, neighborhoods, and other features rich with stories, among them Newgate Prison, "an emblem of death and suffering," the "dirty" East End, and, of course, the Thames, London's "river of commerce." Characters such as infamous "prison-breaker" Jack Sheppard are vividly re-created, as are scenes like the sights and smells of the market in 1276 and the bloody Notting Hill riots in 1958. The book is full of both horrors, including the overwhelming number of beggars and the "impaled heads of traitors" in the 1600s, and soaring achievements, as London rises to the "center of world commerce" in the 1800s. Ackroyd's passion for this remarkable city is clearly evident. Recommended for all public libraries.

it was a good start to my study of London and its history

Having bought this book for personal study, I would say this is well written, with supplemental pictures. While I don't believe this to be a complete overview by any means, it was a good start to my study of London and its history.

"London, the Biography" by Peter Ackroyd differs from "London: The Autobiography" (by Lewis) in that the latter is a collection of writings about London by time period. In Ackroyd's Biography of London, the chapters are arranged by time period, with historical information, maps, drawings, and some quotations. Ackroyd's book is a treasure trove for the tourist visiting London's neighborhoods and monuments. The book is also very helpful with research into particular periods, offering innumberable examples and quotations from the locals. It is easier to find the odd and astounding fact in Ackroyd's book. I liked both books equally well, but have found Ackroyd's easier and more fully developed for research into this amazing, historic city.
