This book is an excellent study that gives background on the historical cultural makeup of El Paso, TX. Garcia explores the relationship between Anglo Americans and Mexicans/Mexican Americans. The author argues, among other things, that economic interdependence led to an atmosphere of racial and ethnic cooperation. It puts to bed the myth of the so-called racial harmony that exists in many borderland communities. It is however an older study that could perhaps help another generation of scholars pick up where Garcia left off.

*Note on the only other review of this book: It's sad that people would give a book they never even bothered to read a one-star rating.

He was about to inquire into Carina's whereabouts when she emerged at the top of the stairs. She paused. Uncertainty flickered across her face. For a moment he thought she was going to fade back into the shadows of the upper floors. But she took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and stepped off the landing.

He inhaled a ragged breath at the sight of her. Her dress accentuated the slight swing of her hips while the tight bodice molded perfectly to the swell of her breasts. With each step as she descended, a slow burn heated his blood, flooding hot desire straight to his groin. She shimmered in the soft light spilling from the room--a light acting as a path for her to follow, illuminating her way...to him.�

She entered with her head bowed and lowered into a deep curtsy. "Your Majesty."

He extended his hand and tried to keep his fingers from twitching in anticipation of her touch. His body trembled when her hand slipped into his.

For the second time today, he couldn't let her go. She had entered the room on a whisper, but swept across his senses like a winter storm.

As she looked down, he resisted the urge to brush his thumb across the soft curve of her lips. She was a feast for his eyes to devour. He wanted to tell her that she looked stunning, but his voice failed him and he could only mutter her name in a gravelly, scrape of sound.

One Hell of an Emotional Rollercoaster....

....Was exactly what i felt. When an author can make their readers feel pain, love, sadness, jealousy, etc then that author did their job well. TJ Shaw did exactly just that and more. I felt as this omniscient being who witness and experienced everything. I cried when Carina should have cried but remained strong even though she wanted to. When i read this story i was reminded of an archetype, Cinderella. But instead of finding her missing slipper and marrying the prince, Carina discovers her past and future with her soul-mate, Marek (who is by the way King :)
So if dragons, magic and finding true love is your thing then look no further for this book is one that i fell instantly in love with. I will be waiting eagerly for her next book to see what dangers lie in wait for Carina XP

Cinderella meets Pern

I don't know why I don't read traditional fantasy more often. I always end up loving the books! Always! And Caller of Light was no exception. Shaw builds a completely unique world full of Critons, which are essentially dragons. The Critons bond with their riders but they sometimes need assistance from a caller. Unfortunately the last caller dropped off the face of the earth over a decade ago.

Meanwhile, Carina is our spirited underdog. Abused and treated as a servant in her own house she captures the heart of a King. Her evil half sister is willing to do whatever it takes to sabotageCarina and Duncan's relationship. Meanwhile there's political intrigue and looming threats of war in Duncan's kingdom

The only thing I didn't like, and yes, I know, this is crazy nitpicky, I didn't like that Criton was capitalized. I get that their sentient super special cool dragon like creatures, but you don't capitalize dragon, you capitalize the dragons name. I don't think I would have noticed at all had I not just had to do a global edit for something very similar. But I did notice, and the word criton was used here about as often as the word horse would be used in a western so it just kept poking at me.

However, I just read a long book and my only complaint whatsoever is the capitalization of one word. I think that speaks volumes for how GOOD this book is

Great Heartwarming story!! So worth it.

First and foremost I would recommend this book to everyone I know who likes romance, mystery, and a heartwarming story. I cried when the book warranted it. It made me sad, happy, mad, and at times pissed off. LoL. I chose 5 stars because the storyline was on point. It wasn't what I expected it to be, but it went beyond my expectations. I won't spoil it, but my only advice would be to come up with another book because this story warrants a better ending at least from my point. Loved the characters Carina, Marek, Damon, and Caden. :)

Excellent prose

Gardner Dozois is best known for editing anthologies, but his fiction is world class. Dozois's The Visible Man and Other Stories is the most visceral, compelling writing I have ever encountered. His prose is flawless and detailed. One story takes place in a run down house, and you can smell the overflowing ashtrays, you can feel the grime on the carpet. The story The Visible Man takes an ingenious twist on 'hiding in plain sight.' Highly recommended.

A welter of spume among the outer limits

Gardner Dozois' collection of short stories is what the original Outer Limits TV show would have been if it was aimed at a more intellectual audience and there were no censors. Dozois explores the most disturbing reaches of the human mind, setting his tales in worlds positively choking with a thick, suffocating atmosphere that comes right off the page and envelopes the reader. This guy can really set a mood. The last two pieces, A Special Kind of Morning and Chains of the Sea, represent a master of the sci-fi short story at the top of his form.

The most famous science fiction writer you never heard of; a mixed bundle of masterful prose and mind-staggering vistas

Gardner Dozois is arguably the most famous science fiction writer you never heard of. He is science fiction's most influential editor and anthologist, the ultimate insider who shaped two generations of speculative fiction writers and fans since first coming on the scene in 1970. Like many gifted editors, Dozois began as a writer of short fiction, developing unique story lines and an intellectually high level of prose that set him apart from the mainstream. The Visible Man, his first collection of short stories, was published in 1977 to high praise from peers and fans. Several others followed. But Dozois never moved far beyond short fiction, writing one solo novel and a couple collaborations before moving on to full-time editing. This despite emerging during the heady era of mass-market paperback madness when there was serious money to be made. Instead, Dozois took a decidedly less lucrative career turn as an editor of science fiction magazines -- Galaxy Science Fiction, If, Worlds of Fantasy, Worlds of Tomorrow and ultimately, Asimov's Science Fiction (which he co-founded). He also emerged as the greatest anthologist in science fiction.
The Visible Man, his first collection, reflects his early period, 1970-1975. His writing style here is brilliant in it's descriptive prose but a little weak on dialogue. Some of the stories feel incomplete and don't go anywhere (He would have done well in the contemporary genre of Flash Fiction!). Stylistically he resembles a cerebral Stephen King. They came from the same cultural milieu -- a small town New England coming of age in the 1960s; fascinated by pop culture; gifted above their peers. Dozois' early fiction has a similar feel to King's early work. This collection starts off with a bang with the science fiction classic, "The Visible Man," for which the collection is named. It's a fantastic bit of "Twilight Zone/Outer Limits"-like suspense. From there the stories move back and forth in length, genre and satisfaction. Some of the 12 stories are not even science fiction ("A Dream at Noonday"). Several take place in the inner space of a character's declining mental state. Dozois' gift is his cloying descriptive prose. It sticks to you long after you are done reading. Some stories, like "Where No Sun Shines", a jarring dystopian terror-drama, pre-figures the apocalyptic fiction popular today (minus the zombies). Others, like "A Special Kind of Morning" and "Chains of the Sea" are unique Dozois short-takes on well-known science fiction themes (Heinlein's Starship Troopers and Wells' War of the Worlds respectively). My 1977 edition has a fascinating introduction by Robert Silverberg describing Dozois' career circa 1977. It's a nice collection of brilliant short fiction by a smart writer establishing his genre bona fides before transitioning to greater things. Dozois fans and serious lovers of stimulating short fiction (circa 1975) should seek this book out (mine is an original 1977 mass-market edition -- the way fiction was meant to be published!). But those looking for quick-reading, action-oriented sci-fi may find Dozois' prose a bit cumbersome.

The reconstruction of meanings embedded in the deer image carries the investigation back to rock carvings, paintings, and monolithic stelae of South Siberia and northern Central Asia, from the Neolithic period down through the early Iron Age. The succession of images dominating that artistic tradition is considered against the background of cultures including the Baykal Neolithic Afanasevo, Okunev, Andronovo, and Karasuk evolving from a hunting-fishing dependency to a dependency on livestock. The archaic mythic traditions of specific Siberian groups are also found to lend critical detail to the changing symbolic systems of South Siberia."

Esther Jacobson is an art historian at the University of Oregon. She has published extensively in the fields of Chinese art history and the art history and culture of the early nomadic peoples of Siberia and Central Asia.

Extraordinary Work

I am astonished to find that this book is no longer available. The data on ancient shamanism alone should have garnered a huge and very receptive worldwide audience. The book is rich, evocative, meticulously researched and beautifully written. As a cross-cultural mythologist, what first caught my attention when I read this book in late 2003 were the potent archetypal mythic themes -- amazing data on the larch as world tree; ritual burial dolls (the forerunners of Vasilisa's wise doll-guide in much later Russian fairy tales); Deer Mother/Elk Mother/Bear Mother themes (FYI: were it not for the fact that ancient Bear Mother-worshipping peoples influenced the West before Deer/Elk Mother-worshipping peoples, the Great Bear (Ursa Major) constellation would be called the Great Deer (or Elk). Jacobson explores pre-shamanic cults with a wealth of engrossing data. These cults involved female-power as the Goddess or Mistress of the Hearth and Animals. As later male-focused shamanism developed, Jacobson explores the continuing strong role of the feminine in, for example, decorative, ritual female garb worn by males along with many other unusual elements (Jacobson is especially brilliant in comparing and contrasting female and male power in Other Worldly realms). Finally, the book concludes with 21 B&W plates depicting a wide variety of detailed archaeological finds. I do hope Brill will make this book available again. It's too good to vanish.
