Spooky and convincing

I ordered this book out of curiosity, I am a huge fan of Wuthering Heights so I wanted to taste it with in the horror key for once. I wasn't expecting much from this book but it turned out to be very pleasant! It is well written and faithful to the original novel. I was happy to read Heathcliff's point of view for once and the vampire reference had been really interesting. One of my favourite mash-up surely.

If you loved the original....

As an English teacher, I always love an inside joke and this treatment of Wuthering Heights is full of Bronte-esque puns that the mistress of the Gothic novel would have loved. This one was a thumbs up, although not as briskly moving as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, or George Washington, Werewolf.

The great house and grounds of Althorp in Northamptonshire have been home to the Spencer family for nearly 500 years. They first leased farm land in the area of grazing in 1486, and in 1508 Sir John Spencer acquired the 300-acre estate on which he built the first house. Earl Spencer has written a fascinating account of the house that combines the details of art and architecture (Althorp has one of the greatest private art collections in the country, including paintings by Van Dyck, Rubens, Reynolds, Stubbs and Gainsborough) with a personal appreciation of all its qualities. He also provides a first-hand description of the many changes that have occurred in recent years. With splendid photography, some of it from Althorp's archives and some of it specially commissioned, this new book offers the perfect guide to one of England's greatest houses.

This account of Althorp, his family seat, by Charles, the ninth earl Spencer, only scratches the surface of its 500-year history. Nevertheless, whether he is describing the sleepless nights of his childhood, the ticking of clocks "always ... too subtle a sound, getting absorbed in the oak of the floorboards and the fabric of the tapestries," or appraising the forbidding character of his grandfather, the "Curator Earl," Spencer casts a candid, evocative light on his subject.

Indeed, Spencer's own efforts on the estate have been considerable. First comes the business of repairing the predations of his "short-termist stepmother," Raine, the countess of Dartmouth, who has laid down wall-to-wall oatmeal carpet in a 115-foot-long Tudor picture gallery. Now comes the death and burial on the estate of his sister, Diana, the princess of Wales. That Charles must now curate the family home as a site of global mourning is a trial quite the equal of anything the estate has ever faced.

Subtitled "The Story of an English House," the book has a structure, dividing the subject into buildings, grounds, family history, and collections, that is entirely conventional. Yet Spencer surprises by packing in many details about the social and political vicissitudes that shaped his family's wealth and taste. In doing so, he eschews his grandfather's regrettable elitism, while losing none of the old man's dedication to the family's heritage. About the Author
Charles, Viscount Althorp, became the ninth Earl Spencer on the death of his father in 1992. Since then he has undertaken extensive refurbishment of Althorp and supervised the changes made to accommodate the many thousands of people who wish to visit the home and grounds since the death of his sister. He was educated at Eton College and obtained his degree in Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford.

Beware, Kindle Edition has no photographs

Enjoyed Charles Spencer's history of his family and their ancestral home Althorp but was very disappointed that there were no accompanying photographs as was in the print edition. Only giving this two stars as I feel rather cheated as in many places the narrative assumes the reader is also referencing photographs of the rooms or works of art being discussed. Without any accompanying photographs, this Kindle Edition of the book is disappointing.

Having been a huge admirer of Diana, Princess if Wales, I jumped at the chance to read this book. I was not disappointed! It was a most interesting history of Althorp and of the Spencers through the years. Anyone who is interested in English history and English historic houses this is a must read. And not just because it was Diana's ancestral home. I highly recommend Althorp: The Story of an English House!!

A quick look at English aristocracy and the estates that are passed down through generations. Upkeep increases as revenue declines, and we see works of art sold at auction, often way below their true value. A sad state of affairs, but there are many who struggle to preserve this history. Diana's resting place is here.

Scorpion SSN 589, a 99-man fast attack submarine, sank 400 miles southwest of the Azores on May 22, 1968, a time during the Cold War when the Soviet Navy was expanding and becoming more aggressive. The Navy's top secret court of inquiry, however, theorized that the Scorpion was sunk by its own hot-running torpedo, not an enemy vessel. In this thorough post-mortem, military beat reporter Offley challenges the Navy's official report-including details like when the wreckage was found and what the sub's mission had been-with a succinct charge: "It was all a lie." Offley believes the Scorpion was sunk by the Soviets, in retaliation for the loss of one of their subs two months prior. Using the U.S.S. Pueblo incident of January, 1968, in which key cryptography gear was lost, Offley connects the dots between the Navy, the John Walker spy ring, and Soviet intelligence to conclude that the Russians had access to all of the Navy's most secret communications, allowing them to ambush the Scorpion. Most of Offley's argument, while compelling, is based solely on interviews with former Navy personnel, and a lack of factual evidence weakens it. Still, this well-told narrative history holds much appeal for naval historians and conspiracy buffs.

On May 22, 1968, the submarine Scorpion exploded and sank 400 miles southeast of the Azores, killing all 99 men aboard. It had been torpedoed by a Soviet submarine in retaliation for its suspected involvement in the disappearance 11 weeks earlier of the Soviet submarine K-129. Oilley believes that admirals in the U.S and Soviet navies--fearing what could become World War III--agreed to hide the truth of the two sinkings. Only 91 seconds after the torpedo struck, the Scorpion plunged 1,300 feet below the surface. By May 31, a search force had increased to 55 surface ships and submarines and three dozen land-based patrol aircraft. On June 5, the U.S. declared that it was lost at sea, and on October 30, the navy announced the discovery of the vessel. Based on 25 years of research, which included investigating declassified navy documents, Offley reveals details of the events that led to the vessel's sinking and the cover-up that followed. A most interesting tale, this book answers many of the lingering questions concerning the loss of the Scorpion back in 1968. Mr. Offley presents a strong case for the one conclusion that might have started a war back then, I,e, that the sub was attacked and sunk . Dr Ballard's pictures make it clear that there is evidence of a torpedo strike on the sub, and this puts the lie to the official version of what happened. It would also explain certain reports that came out in the so called Russian Spring.This book deserves to be read by everyone.

About the Author
Professor John Watton began his career in industry working on the design of heat exchangers. He later entered University College Cardiff to study mechanical engineering. On completion of his PhD in fluidic control in 1969 he returned to industry as a Senior Systems Engineer working on the electrohydraulic control of guided pipe laying vehicles with Hudswell Badger Ltd, Leeds. Following a period as a Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering and Control at Huddersfield Polytechnic, he joined Cardiff University as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1979. He was awarded his DSc (University of Wales) for contributions to fluid power in 1996. He also received the IMechE Bramah Medal in 2000 and a special award from the Japanese Fluid Power Society in 2005, both for outstanding contributions in fluid power. He was elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1997 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007.

About the Author

Steven E. Barkan is Professor of sociology at the University of Maine, where he has taught since 1979. His teaching and research interests include criminology, sociology of law, and social movements. He is the 2008-2009 president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems and had previously served as a member of the SSSP Board of Directors, as chair of its Law and Society Division and Editorial and Publications Committee, and as an advisory editor of its journal,Social Problems. He has served on the student paper award committees of the Crime, Law, and Deviance and Sociology of Law sections of the American Sociological Association. Professor Barkan has written many journal articles dealing with topics such as racial prejudice and death penalty attitudes, views on police brutality, political trials, and feminist activism. These articles have appeared in the American Sociological Review, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Journal of Crime and Justice, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Justice Quarterly, Social Forces, Social Problems, Sociological Forum, Sociological Inquiry, and other journals. For Prentice Hall, he is the author of Criminology: A Sociological Understanding, 4/e and of Law and Society: An Introduction (both coming out in early 2008).

Georgia Weidman is a penetration tester, researcher, and the founder of Bulb Security, a security consulting firm. She has presented at conferences around the world, including BlackHat, Shmoocon, and Derbycon, and teaches classes on topics like penetration testing, mobile hacking, and exploit development. In 2012, she was awarded a DARPA Cyber Fast Track grant to continue her work in mobile device security.

Great for Beginners

I have tried hacking before, years ago with no success. There are a lot more tools now (I've learned) and I'm sure there is a lot more info online but finding the right info and things that actually work can be a daunting task in itself. You can find the info you need online for anything these days if you want to work that hard. I don't. I especially like all the screen shots. I hate it when the instructions take you through multiple steps and then show you a screenshot. When mine doesn't look like theirs, I have no clue where I went wrong. Thanks to all those screenshots, that doesn't happen with this book. Big plus!

I saw this book and thought it would make an interesting summer project. And it has been! Setting up the lab was challenging but the instructions were great. Be prepared for a lot of "I did it!" rushes as you work through this book. I especially enjoyed the Exploit Development chapters. I can't compare it to other books on the subject but you won't be disappointed with this one. It is truly a great book for beginners on the subject. It does not make you an expert but I feel I know enough to be of use on a team of pentesters.

An excellent resource for people looking for an introduction to penetration testing

Penetration testing and hacking is a sexy subject. With all of the big public breaches every year, security has come to the forefront of many peoples minds and the demand for young skilled hackers is greater than ever. The problem is that many of these would be hackers have no idea where to begin. They don't have money for higher education of fancy certifications, so where do we as a security community tell them to begin. I always point people at books. They are generally inexpensive and easy to get. I have been doing penetration testing for a number of years professionally so I am familiar with all of the topics in this book already, however, I am constantly reading material like this so that I can find the best resources to point out to new hackers.

I found this book to be well laid out with lots of explanations and an easy to follow methodology. I believe some of the people who have previously reviewed the book forgot what it is like to start with zero knowledge. I know when I was starting in hacking, I was thankful for as many screenshots as possible so I knew I was entering the correct commands. I especially like the way the book follows the Penetration Testing Execution Standard (PTES).

If you are new to hacking or penetration testing, this is the perfect resource to get you started and help you determine if this is the correct career path for you!

Really Good - Out of Date

This is a good book with a lot of really good technical information. The unfortunate side of things is that the VMs required are almost impossible to get now due to not being supported so it is really hard to set up the lab to follow along. You just have to get creative. I am hoping that they are in the works for an update on this because it has the potential to be really good. When it was released it was easily 5 stars.
