Read this series - it is up there with the best; trust me on this.
By Darren
This is one of the best Epic Fantasy series I have read - and I have read pretty much all of the best from Tolkien to Robert Jordon's The Wheel of Time to Brandon Sanderson's full collection to name a few. It has everything you would want in this genre; the writing pulls me into another world of action, drama and intrigue. It is fast pace while at the same time having a many layered story line. Honestly I would recommend this series to anyone.

better than books one and two!
By Sneaky Burrito
I read the first two books in this series earlier this year and, while they were fairly conventional hero's journey-type books with a lot of fantasy tropes, I liked them enough to keep going. And I think this book redeemed the series in a way I was not expecting. I will try to be vague to avoid spoilers, as best I can. Note: there may be some spoilers for previous books in the series in this review. You would want to read those first, before starting with this one. There are a LOT of characters in this series and it is best to encounter them as they are introduced in the previous books. You will have a much easier time keeping them straight.

One thing that has puzzled me about this series is why Corban was the Bright Star (a prophesied hero who will lead the forces of good...). Corban was just an average boy from a small village. Not the best fighter in the early books (in fact, in book one, his sister had to help him out of a few scrapes). Not of royal parentage. Etc. Well, that question is answered here and it is not at all what I expected (but is not pulled out of nowhere, either, and it does explain some actions another character has taken at various points). I actually love that revelation and its aftermath.

Another thing I like about this book are the parallels between Corban's and Nathair's (the human leader of one of the main forces antagonizing Corban's group) situations. Nathair, as we've come to realize, isn't the Bright Star he thought he was. He is royalty and was born to lead. He has an otherworldly adviser (as does Corban). He also gathers allies. In some sense, we always knew he was a bad egg, though. His animal companion is nasty and uncontrollable compared to Corban's. He uses unethical tactics to get what he wants. So he is obviously a bad guy. But...for the longest time, he *thought* he was a good guy. So he doesn't lose all sympathy (just a lot of it). And I legitimately don't know if he will redeem himself or not. I look forward to finding out.

As I said earlier, this book contains a lot of characters. For the most part, I don't have trouble telling them apart. (Uthas and Ulfilas being exceptions, simply because of the similarities between the names. I am not 100% sure I got the names right even now, but I don't have my Kindle nearby to check.) Gwynne actually does a pretty good job with this, considering the size of the cast.

Our heroes find themselves in a lot of trouble in this book. At first I was bemoaning the similarities of Maquin's (a former shieldman, giant-hunter, oarsman, and pit fighter, among other things) and Camlin's (a former forest bandit turned shieldman to a queen) situations. But they get out of their situations in different ways, and their enemies end up having different competencies or lack thereof. It wasn't the same thing twice. And both were set up well, with varying degrees of preparation in the story.

A lot of rivalries and conflicts from past books were brought up again here, with the storylines continuing. A couple of these were brought to a close, while others were allowed to continue. I'm glad to see some loose ends tied up, and not all left until the final volume. The story is still pretty expansive, but it is tightening.

We know a lot of the characters by now, but some of them continue to grow and change. Vonn (boy from Corban's village who has broken with his father) is given the opportunity to show conflicting emotions here in a way he didn't before. Cywen (Corban's sister) is still quite competent, but gains some new skills. Gar (a guardian of Corban's, basically) has to take on some new responsibilities. Lorcan (a spoiled prince from previous books) grows up and becomes someone whose fate I'm actually interested in. Corban continues on the expected path, but remains true to himself.

Some events were predictable. I have been waiting since book one for Veradis to do something and he has now done it. Some romances developed (or seem to be developing) along a predictable path. Now, romances predicted in past volumes have ended with character deaths, so I don't think everyone's out of the woods yet. We'll see.

In terms of writing style, world building, etc., if you liked these aspects of the first two books, you'll see more of the same here. It was kind of comforting and familiar to travel back to this world, actually. The only other complaint I have is that this book was long. Very long. I think the author did what he had to, to get to the endpoint he had in mind. So I'm not sure how it could be shortened.

Anyway, I wasn't sure what rating I would give this book until I started writing the review and realized there was a lot I liked about this book, especially compared to past volumes. I'm looking forward to the next one. 4.5 stars.

Just getting to work now at 7 am after 2 and half hours sleep last night because I could not stop reading until I finished this
By Amazon Customer
Never actually write reviews. Had to take a min to say something after this one. Got hooked on fantasy books after I read GOT years ago and have gone through countless authors, books, and series since then looking for something that was so all engrossing that I literally couldn't put it down and captivated not only my imagination but allows for such emotional attachment to characters and story lines. Just getting to work now at 7 am after 2 and half hours sleep last night because I could not stop reading until I finished this one and I have realized that I finally found a series that I think is as good if not better than GOT. I'm sure people get sick of hearing, if you like this or that then this book is for you. I know I do. I'm not saying Martin sould be the gold standard for every fantasy fan but he has been so far for me. With that said, Gwynne has put himself, at the very least, on par with Martin and this last installment of this amazing series exceeded my expectations in every way. Can't wait for more for John Gwynne.

Nanjing Requiem, by Ha Jin

It's 1937, and the Japanese are poised to invade Nanjing. Minnie Vautrin, an American missionary and the dean of Jinling Women's College, decides to remain at the school, convinced that her American citizenship will help her safeguard the welfare of the Chinese men and women who work there. She is painfully mistaken. In the aftermath of the invasion, the school becomes a refugee camp for more than ten thousand homeless women and children, and Vautrin must struggle, day after day, to intercede on the behalf of the hapless victims. Yet even when order and civility are restored, she remains deeply embattled, always haunted by the lives she could not save.

Wonderful
By John Jorgensen
First, a few words on my background with this author. I was required to read Waiting: A Novel in college, and while I didn't mind reading it, I found it pretty dry and knew I would never have chosen to read it on my own. I did choose to read War Trash a few years ago when it was recommended by a coworker after we toured the Korean DMZ together one weekend. I started it, and while I didn't dislike it, it didn't grab my interest. Eventually I gave up on it somewhere in the middle chapters when another book which I'd been dying to read for months finally came out. I told myself I would return to it after I finished the new book, but I never did.

So I was a bit ambivalent about reading another Ha Jin book; somewhere along the line I came to associate him with dry, slow-paced, mediocre writing. The subject matter did grab my attention this time: A literary celebration of the heroes of the Rape of Nanjing is certainly an interesting premise. But I wondered whether the author could do it justice.

Did he ever! This is a wonderful book. It tells the tale of Minnie Vautrin, an American missionary and acting president of Jinling College during the Japanese capture of Nanjing. Vautrin joins a number of other Westerners in making property in the Western district available for refugee camps, banking on the hope that Japan will be too concerned with maintaining good relations with the West to violate Western property. Chinese from other neighborhoods in the city as well as the surrounding countryside came pouring into the Safety Zone these foreigners established and soon every refugee camp was filled to capacity several times over. Discipline broke down in the Imperial Army's ranks after China's Republican capital fell, and soldiers engaged in a stomach-churning orgy of violence throughout the region that lasted for months. They sometimes respected the Safety Zone's neutrality, but often they did not. Minnie Vautrin and others like her were constantly confronting Japanese soldiers within their refugee camps, trying to repel them with bluster and bluff and little else. Complaints were lodged with the Japanese authorities, but nothing came of them. Evidence of war crimes was quietly gathered, but by the time Japan had been defeated and the war crimes tribunals were seated, the West was more concerned with the Cold War and went easy on prominent Japanese officials so as not to antagonize a strategically-significant potential ally.

The first forty percent of the book or so tells of refugees seeking admission to the Safety Zone and of desperate attempts to protect these refugees from harm. Jinling admitted only women; the only males in the camp (aside from staff) were boys under thirteen fleeing with their mothers. This made the camp a particular target for Japanese who looked forward to the opportunity to carry out sexual assaults without the danger that their victims would be defended by adult male relatives. So much rape in those chapters, and we see Minnie Vautrin come to regret her decision to set up an all-female camp, as well as wrestle with impossible moral dilemmas in the interest of protecting as many women as she can.

The remaining three fifths of the book deal with the aftermath of the Rape of Nanjing. Discipline in the ranks was eventually restored, and the refugee camps finally emptied as civilians could feel relatively safe. But the occupation continued, and the destruction of property and farmland left so many people displaced and impoverished. Among some characters there's a sense of "The worst is over, time to move on." I realized with a bit of a shock that their side had won the battle to write history: I was familiar with the orgy of violence that followed the fall of Nanjing, and as I read the first two sections of the book much was familiar to me; but the rest of it was completely unknown to me, and I realized I'd never thought to ask how long the aftermath and privations lingered on.

Minnie starts two new programs at the once-exclusive women's college designed to equip poor women with economically valuable skills so that they can survive the bold new world in which they find themselves. She eventually meets stiff resistance in the form of Mrs Dennison, the retired President of Jinling who was in America during the Rape of Nanjing and returns unable to understand the depth and breadth of the inhumanity that had so recently visited the city. She is determined to see Jinling regain its elitist college reputation as soon as possible and fights Minnie's attempts to minister to Nanjing's destitute. She, the Japanese authorities, and various Chinese all attack Minnie's reputation, asking painful questions about impossible decisions Minnie made in the heat of the moment, all of which were intended to minimize refugee suffering but many of which had unfortunate side effects. Minnie is already haunted by the memories of the many refugees she couldn't save, and this defamation of character overwhelms her. . . . But then, I'd better not spoil something so close to the novel's ending.

Minnie Vautrin and the Americans and Germans with whom she coordinates attempts to save refugees were all real, as were a host of other VIPs who appeared or were referenced in various roles. Ha Jin researched Vautrin extensively, using her diaries as well as primary sources of people who knew her during the crisis. We are also introduced to a range of Chinese characters who suffer mightily and tell stories full of pathos. I'm not sure whether any given one of them was historical or fictional; I am sure that they are moving and sympathetic.

The viewpoint character is Anling, forewoman of Jinling and Minnie's tireless assistant. I don't know whether she is historical either. I found her less well-realized than many of the characters with whom she interacted. She just didn't come across as being all that interesting, and my interest definitely tended to flag during chapters where she attended to her own affairs instead of helping Minnie attend to hers.

Otherwise, my judgment that Ha Jin's writing is slow-paced and dry has not been borne up by this book. The post-Rape of Nanjing storylines develop at a slower pace than those that developed during the hectic worst of the crisis; indeed, they feel downright leisurely by comparison. But they never feel like they're dragging. Despite what I said in the previous paragraph about Anling-centered chapters, none of the subplots ever feel dull. Characters, especially Minnie herself, are strong, and carry many a scene that might otherwise have fallen flat. Also, the book's pacing is helped by the fact that the slightly less than 300 pages are divided into no fewer than fifty-two chapters. As I've said elsewhere, I heartily approve of short chapters; they prevent a book from bogging down and indicate that the author has put a great deal of thought into what he or she wants to say, what is relevant to a given subject, what is not, and how different aspects of the narrative should lead from one to the next.

There is room for a bit of nitpicking: The book got Shiro Ishii's rank wrong, and in one very odd scene, Anling and her daughter--both Christians--suggest that their son/brother--also a Christian--might want to consider becoming a polygamist. Umm. . . .

I'm not inclined to criticize, though. The stronger a story is, the more willing I am to overlook such pecadilloes, and this is an extremely strong story, one of the strongest I've read this year. It carries my highest recommendation.

Big Disappointment
By Toronto
I read "Nanjing Requiem" authored by Ha Jin whose books had in the past received many awards and honors because its description leads me to believe that it is an epic which sooths the souls of the victims of the Rape of Nanking and tells of the courage of Minnie Vautrin. Yet, the book turns out to be a total disappointment. It appears to be a book written and rushed to meet a deadline; the storylines do not connect and a chop suey style of writing mixes bits and pieces of writings from other sources.

The book provides no insight to the real suffering of the victims or the courage of Minnie Vautrin. I do not expect or wish the book to sensationalize the horrors of the Rape of Nanking, but I also do not expect the book to turn the victims into insensitive vicious mobs either.

Maybe the author wants the readers to do some soul searching by showing decent people who at the point of becoming a victim of atrocity can be changed to nasty human beings during the Nanking Massacre. With the flat and robotic writing, the author fails to depict the passion deep enough to reveal the suffering of the soul of the victims. Worse, the victims are painted as thugs in some incidents.

Weaving the fanatical mentality of Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution in the tragic Rape of Nanking era, instead of telling how the refugees helping each other, Ha Jin presents the refugees as heartless riotous mobs against a poor woman who stole a mug of rice to feed her 15 years old son jailed by the Japanese. This shows his complete lack of empathy and respect for these victims. Even in fiction, when the victims were made to lie against Vautrin for their own survival is, I feel, defamatory to the many real victims who could no longer defend their honor against the author's slanderous insinuations.

In addition, the language and more specifically the 21st century swear words that come from Vautrin's mouth are so atypical not only of a female but also of a female missionary of that era. Through Anling's narratives, Vautrin is presented inconsistently that she is also shallow, indecisive and without a level head, at times, with self-glorification. These are not the facts according to the historical documents. Such description becomes a sacrilege to this missionary loving courageous soul.

If I were the victims and Minnie Vautrin, and this is how I am memorialized, I would cry out from the grave against such distortions of the truth.

I expect much better writing from an English Professor and the many award-winning author. All of the above makes it a torture to finish reading the book.

For those who are interested in knowing the real Minnie Vautrin and the historical facts of the Nanking Massacre, Hua-ling Hu's "The American Goddess at the Rape of Nanking: Courage of Minnie Vautrin" and "The Undaunted Women of Nanking - The Wartime Diaries of Minnie Vautrin and Tsen Shui-fang" would provide a much more accurate account and deeper insight into the times and Vautrin's character. For those who are interested in the horrors of the Nanking Massacre, they can read Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking".

A Failure as Historical Fiction
By L. Young
The intent of Ha Jin's new novel "Nanjing Requiem" is to bring the atrocities of the Japanese, during what is know as 'The Rape of Nanjing" to a wider public, as well as to celebrate the bravery of several Westerners who lived through this period and sought to stand up to the Japanese and protect innocent Chinese from slaughter. In particular the novel focuses on real life, Minnie Vautrin, an American missionary and the Dean of Jinling Women's College, which she used to shelter thousands who sought to escape the atrocities.

"Nanjing Requiem" is a piece of historical fiction. In this genre an author takes a story of real and or imagined characters and brings the immediacy of their historical period to life through the interplay of history and the intimacy of the characters lives. Unfortunately as a pice of historical fiction "Nanjing Requiem" fails. There is no underlying intimate storyline. We merely have here a seemingly endless recitation of facts. For example on Dec. 8., Minnie went here and confronted the Japanese authorities. On Jan. 10 she went there and confronted the Japanese. There is no underlying story that holds the historical facts together and makes those facts real and immediate to the reader. The writing is so wooden that the endless description of brutality loses all emotional power to move the reader. I can only compare this novel to another work of historical fiction which is vastly superior, Ballard's 'Empire of the Sun", also concerned with Japanese brutality.

"Nanjing Requiem" sadly is a terrible disappointment, as The Rape of Nanjing is a story that needs to be told.

How Buildings Learn is a masterful new synthesis that proposes that buildings adapt best when constantly refined and reshaped by their occupants, and that architects can mature from being artists of space to becoming artists of time.

From the connected farmhouses of New England to I.M. Pei's Media Lab, from "satisficing" to "form follows funding," from the evolution of bungalows to the invention of Santa Fe Style, from Low Road military surplus buildings to a High Road English classic like Chatsworth—this is a far-ranging survey of unexplored essential territory.

More than any other human artifacts, buildings improve with time—if they're allowed to. How Buildings Learn shows how to work with time rather than against it.

From Publishers Weekly
All buildings are forced to adapt over time because of physical deterioration, changing surroundings and the life within--yet very few buildings adapt gracefully, according to Brand. Houses, he notes, respond to families' tastes, ideas, annoyance and growth; and institutional buildings change with expensive reluctance and delay; while commercial structures have to adapt quickly because of intense competitive pressures. Creator of The Whole Earth Catalog and founder of CoEvolution Quarterly (now Whole Earth Review ), Brand splices a conversational text with hundreds of extensively captioned photographs and drawings juxtaposing buildings that age well with those that age poorly. He buttresses his critique with insights gleaned from facilities managers, planners, preservationists, building historians and futurists. This informative, innovative handbook sets forth a strategy for constructing adaptive buildings that incorporates a conservationist approach to design, use of traditional materials, attention to local vernacular styles and budgeting to allow for continuous adjustment and maintenance.

From Kirkus Reviews
Brand founder of The Whole Earth Catalog and CoEvolution Quarterly, launches a populist attack on rarefied architectural conventions. A hippy elder statesman (once one of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters), Brand argues that a building can ``grow'' and should be treated as a ``Darwinian mechanism,'' something that adapts over time to meet certain changing needs. His humanistic insights grew out of a university seminar he taught in 1988. Catchy anti- establishment phrases abound: ``Function reforms form, perpetually,'' or ``Form follows funding.'' Thomas Jefferson, a ``high road'' builder, is shown to have tinkered his Monticello into a masterpiece over a lifetime. Commercial structures, Brand says, are ``forever metamorphic,'' as a garage-turned-boutique demonstrates. Photo spreads with smart and chatty captions trace the evolutions of buildings as they adopt new ``skins.'' Pointedly, architects Sir Richard Rogers (designer of the Pompidou Centre in Paris) and I.M. Pei (the Wiesner Building, aka the Media Lab at MIT) are taken to task for designing monumental flops that deny occupants' needs. Later sections track the social meanings of preservationism and celebrate vernacular traditions worldwide (e.g., the Malay house of Malaysia; pueblo architecture; the 18th- century Cape Cod House). Brand also documents his own unique habitats. He lives with his wife in a converted tugboat and houses his library in a metal self-storage container. Here, as throughout, Brand's self-reliant voice rings true--that of an engaging, intellectual crank. Brand makes a case for letting people shape their own environments. His crunchy-granola insights bristle with an undeniable pragmatism. -- Copyright 1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
"It's about time somebody wrote this book. This quirky, thoughtful volume, bursting with curiosity and intelligence, may make our everyday world more visible to more Americans. Architecture is too important to be left to architects alone."
—Mixed Media

"A stunning exploration of the design of design … How Buildings Learn will irrevocably alter yor sense of place, space, and the artifacts that shape them."
—Michael Shrage, Wired

"Penetratingly original."
—Philip Morrison, Scientific American

"An extremely attractive volume that will forever alter the way we respond to the buildings around us. We may also hope it will alter the way architects design buildings."
—Harold Gilliam, San Francisco Chronicle

"A fascinating and indefinable book … How Buildings Learn is a hymn to entropy, a witty, heterodox book dedicated to kicking the stuffing out of the proposition that architecture is permanent and that buildings cannot adapt."
—Stephen Bayley, The Times (London)

"The book's diagnosis is clear and to the poiny, and its illustrations of how buildings change are both fascinating and instructive. This is, in short, one of the rare books that every architect should read."
—Thomas Fisher, editor, Progressive Architecture

"A book of good sound-bites and laser-sharp insight … No architecture students should complete their preliminary studies without reading it from cover to cover."
—Patric Hannay, The Architects' Journal

excellent, thought-provoking, calm
By Greg Wilson (gvwilson@interlog.com)
I've hesitated to review this book because I'm personally suspicious of glowing praise. However, this book deserves it. Brand's starting point is the observation that most architects spend most of their time re-working or extending existing buildings, rather than creating new ones from scratch, but the subject of how buildings change (or, to adopt Brand's metaphor, how buildings learn from their use and environment) is ignored by most architectural schools and theorists. By looking at examples (big and small, ancient and modern), Brand teases out patterns of re-use and change, and argues (very convincingly) that since buildings are going to be modified many times, they should be designed with unanticipated future changes in mind. Of course, the same is true of programs, and I found again and again that I could substitute the word "program" for "building", and "programmer" for "architect", everything Brand said was true of computing as well (but much better written than any software engineering polemic I've ever read).

This Book Effectively Merges Technology with Preservation
By Kiwibird
Stewart Brand's How Buildings Learn: What happens after they're built is as much a reflection of his life as it is about architecture. This potent clearly written essay provides valuable insights for a wider ranging audience while poking fun at established norms in the information age. Depreciatory of modernism casting doubt on the success of popular monuments paying homage to their creators, Brand does not limit his criticism of Wright for Falling Water in southwestern Pennsylvania or I.M. Pei's Media Lab Building at MIT. The strength of the book is the candid and thoughtful approach, interrelating complex issues with simple strands. Weaving a tale of old stuff in a new world, Brand proposes that buildings are most useful to their occupants and neighbors when they adapt. He assures that change will happen and that the only enduring monuments are those that can transform with time. Brand relies on a variety of primary and secondary sources and reinforces his examples with candid photographs, often visually comparing and contrasting to make his points. For each of these archetypes he tests the building against its function to perform basic living needs. He candidly makes observations without concern for political correctness within the broader architectural community.
Proposing six shear levels within a building based on their ability to temporally adapt, How Buildings Learn uses Site, Structure, Skin, Services, Space, and Stuff as a highly successful outline in delivering its message (p. 13). One source attributes this paradigm to that developed by British architect and historian F. Duffy's "Four S's" of capital investment in buildings. The site is eternal, yet often ignored by architects. The structure is most permanent defining the form and lasting 30 to 300 years. The skin is the part the architects get to play with. The services change every 10 to 15 years and, for ease of adaptation, should be kept separate to allow slippage from structure. The space (interior partition and pedestrian flow) and people's stuff change continually at the will of the occupants. After defining these layers, Brand then maps how buildings acclimatize over time based on their architecture.
The architecture is divided into three paths: low road, high road, and monumental. As a counter-culturalist, Brand observations should surprise no one that those dysfunctional places revered by society adapt the worse while despised "low visibility, low-rent, no-style" structures are functional, cost effective, and adapt easily to change. Contrasting the "temporary" World War II government warehouse Building 20 at MIT to I.M. Pei's Media Lab on the same campus, Brand illustrates his points with human testimonies and photographs. Though scheduled for demolition a number of times over the decades, Building 20's adaptable character has resisted. On the contrary, it appears the only forces retaining the overly designed and dysfunctional Media Lab are economic and social: the millions of dollars expended for its construction and the people that approved the funding for a monument to its designer. High Road buildings are high maintenance, described by Brand as a "labor of love measured in lifetimes." Citing original work by the Duchess of Devonshire, he attributes the character of these buildings to "high intent, duration of purpose, and a steady supply of confident dictators" (p. 35).
Unlike Low Road buildings that demonstrate value through utility, or High Road buildings that endure for their beauty and majesty, the worst buildings for adaptation are Famous buildings. For this arena, Brand has a target-rich environment. One book reviewer describes these buildings as "ignoring time, while time does not reciprocate." Because of its leaky roofs, Falling Water becomes, "Rising Mildew" and a "seven-bucket building" (p 58.) Famous buildings cannot adapt. They either exist as monuments to their creators, requiring significant investment to preserve, or as relics on the landscape succumbing to the forces of nature disintegrating into the landscape upon which they sit. Brand applied a similar logical approach to contrast exposed building elements. The Eiffel Tower, though despised by the locals at its inception, now stands as a monumental icon to the technical advances of the early twentieth century. The structure is beautiful in the nude. On the contrary, the exposed systems on the twenty-first century Pompidou Centre - originally celebrated for innovation and creativity - are now rusted and cracked. Without intervention, Famous buildings are destined to return to the landscape from which they were created.
How Buildings Learn mirrors Brand's interest in preservation and high technology. While one might interpret preservation and modern construction materials as diametrically opposed disciplines, Brand alleys these concerns. The chapters on Preservation and Maintenance allude to the desirable attributes of quiet, populist, victorious, and romantic. The space materials create environmental stewardship through their speed, efficiency, strength and effortless implementation. Traditional or "vernacular" materials will be touchable and aesthetic but come at a higher price. Smart materials, created from advanced processes, are cheaper and may provide the economic incentive to preserve an old building that might otherwise succumb to the financial pressures created by vernacular restoration. Brand suggests that future buildings will learn more quickly. He uses computer advances in sensory and motor response as metaphors; however, does not suggest to what part of his six "S's" illustration this prediction relates.
As a matter of fact, Stewart Brand has a history of predicting technical change and has built a contrarian consulting organization around this ability. Unlike most management consultants, yet consistent with How Building Learn, Brand helps companies adapt - designing for impending change instead of planning for a strategic future outcome. As Fortune magazine paraphrased him, "If mind-boggling change is the only constant, focusing on the avoidance of major blunders yields better results than the single-minded pursuit of the big win."

Great insight for architects
By john elliott
As a graduate architecture student i can honestly say this book and insight have shaped the way I think about buildings and the projects I work. The different mindset the author presents in this book really can change the built enviorment we work and live in.

Best Textbook I Own
By Raymundo
My professor co-authored this book and I must say there's absolutely nothing wrong with this text. All examples, concepts and esoteric language is explained and it makes you dream about Concrete (it did for me).

My suggestion is try to make a very simple way to identify key terms in each chapter and write that in the front of the chapter. For example, for strength chapter, write down the terms: w/c, ITZ, Agg size and grade, Agg Elastic Modulus, porosity and relate these terms to strength of concrete.

Post grad engineering textbook
By Ben Bullach
I am a block mason and concrete finisher. I bought this book to increase my knowledge of the trade. It was way over my head. My father in law is a professer of engineering, and he said it's definitely a textbook for post grads and up. I'm sure it's a great book and I envy those who understand it, but a book like Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures by the Portland Cement Association would be s much better choice for a tradesman.
