About the Author
Barbara H. Yasue is a full-time tenured instructor in the ESOL (English for Students of Other Languages) department at Laney College in Oakland, California. In addition to teaching immigrant students, she has led teacher training programs in Portugal under a Fulbright grant, and for the UC Berkeley TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate program. Ms. Yasue has also taught in Korea and Japan, and in Gabon for the Peace Corps. She received her MA in Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language from San Francisco State University. Ms. Yasue’s passion to work with immigrants and to bring their concerns and gifts to light comes from her own experience growing up in an immigrant family.

I really enjoyed Barbara Yasue's book reading and informal presentation this evening. The subjects and their stories were interesting enough that I bought a copy of the book (titled "Transitions") and immediately spent the next three hours reading most of it.

Barbara, in her role as teacher of ESOL at Laney College, is in an unsurpassed position to look into the immigrant experience in the polyglot and multi cultural world of the East Bay. The issues involved are complex, but , without exception, I was struck by the hard work ethic and the determination to succeed of every story told in the book.

Good job, Barbara! Everyone else, do yourself a favor and at least take a look at this interesting book.

Transitions is a well-written, concise and compelling book. I appreciated the view in to the lives, challenges and successes faced by Ms. Yasue's students in a community college setting. Through her development of San San Win's story of fighting for democracy in Burma, and the search for a place in the west, she inspired me to further follow the current history of Burma in current times. This book is well worth reading; I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this easy to read review of the fundamentals of operating system design. The book covers many elements without being bog down in specific functionalities. Reasonable content, lots of incorrect answers

I have just completed using this text in a course, and here's what I can tell you:

The content is written at a level adequate to deliver basic information for an intro to OS course. It appears this content came from McHoes and Flynn's "Understanding Operating Systems"; the content in that text is similar but goes into much deeper detail. I had used this last text for several years and thought it was a good book, if a bit too detailed for my students' needs.

I made the fatal error of assuming that the answer keys for the text questions were accurate. Both the end of chapter questions and the final exam at the end of the text had numerous errors. Further, quite a few questions were ambiguously worded.

Ultimately, my students and I went through the final exam and identified the errors, and I will share the list if anyone is interested.

Bottom line: the content is fuzzy, the chapter and final questions can't be trusted, and McGraw-Hill can't/won't support the text.

I recommend this series to anyone I know who is studying a language. These are the best, simplest and most easily understood grammar books I have ever come across. They have helped me tremendously.

An awesome home learning supplement

I bought this book for my 4 year old son who is pre-k aged to work from at home. After carefully considering the pre-k book and the kindergarten book, I chose the Kindergarten one because he is advanced and I felt he had already mastered the topics in the pre-k level book. I absolutely could not be happier with this book! It is everything I hoped it would be and really surpassed my expectations. It challenges my son just the right amount so that he isn't frustrated, but it isn't too easy either. This book covers a wide variety of topics from letters and their sounds to handwriting, counting, math, learning shapes, measurements, patterns, counting coins, reading etc. There is so much to do and so many different activities for each topic that it even kept my ADD son's attention for a very good length of time. Even better, each topic contains many different kinds of activities to ensure the child fully grasps that concept. The pictures are adorable and are very appealing. They are age appropriate and they are very bright colored. The book is very thick (320 pages) as there is a lot of material, but it is good quality and the pages are easy to write on with pen, pencil, crayon and marker. I love that there is even an answer key in the back of the book in case an independent learner wants to check their own work. There is also a certificate of achievement for the child once they have completed all of the lessons! How exciting is that?! I am excited to continue working with my son on this book and will continue to buy the higher levels once he finishes this one. I highly suggest to ALL parents!!

Great book!

This book is huge and in my opinion really covers everything a child needs to learn. There is. Table of contents that separates each subject. Worksheets in each subject start basic to more complex. I bought this for my pre-schooler to get her ready for kindergarten quick. I don't believe this will be over her head. Lots of fun pictures and colorful pages. Also pages kids can color. Teacher key in the back of book too. I find it unnecessary but it does t take up a lot of space in book.

Perfect for school prep in the Summer!

Perfect for summertime! We love these books and so do our boys. The activities are fun and colorful and easy to understand. I love how huge it is and how many activites are inside. Its not your typical writing practice book, there are various things on each page for each letter of the alphabet that help to work different parts of your kids brains. My 4 year old is super enthusiastic about learning and LOVES doing this book. Not to mention it is prepping him to get ahead of his Pre-K class this upcoming year. We love how this book is really getting him ready for reading/writing/math etc.
