I wrote this book to enable practicing engineers to complete solar projects as well as conventional mechancial, electrical and plumbing projects.� But I hope it will also be a useful book�for educational programs offering�degrees in engineering, engineering technology, or associates in applied science.��I� used this book to teach a 400-level class on Solar Energy and I make MS Excel spreadsheet tools, MS Powerpoint presentations, solved homework and exam problems, and laboratory exercises available for educational use with the book.�

Modern Solar Design all in one place

This very practical and thorough book should be in the engineering reference library of every solar designer. Based on abundant experience and actual projects Walker's book sets itself aside from others, often by academics or hobbyists who do not need to create cost effective and durable systems, by covering the most common solar systems - solar electric, solar water and building heating and air preheating. The technical, economic, and practical design features of each system are covered in detail complete with comparisons of relevant computer design tools, named manufacturers, and case studies. Plentiful numerical examples illustrating key calculations, numerous illustrations and tables for reference complement the text, and rules of thumb enabling quick design at the conceptual design level are included for each solar system type. The author is a solar realist delineating caveats based on field experience and economic realities rather than being a solar idealist making overoptimistic claims ultimately harmful to the maturing of a durable and lasting solar future for the US. To summarize, the Walker book provides all of the information and techniques needed to design solar electrical and heating systems together with seasoned advice on specification and construction details. Very highly recommended.

My new go-to book for solar energy

Andy Walker's Solar Energy fills a need in the AEC industry, and that is a comprehensive design resource focused on the application of solar energy in real projects. The book is extremely well organized and has a wealth of valuable design resources for both active and passive solar energy applications. Walker's book has a great balance of the fundamental science and contextual background to solar energy, but with a strong focus on the "how to". While detailed enough for engineers, the book will also be very useful to architects and others in the building industry. Concepts are clearly explained before diving into the details and the common challenges are revealed so the reader can benefit from Andy's deep experience and knowledge base. As an architect focused on net zero energy buildings this is definitely my new go-to book for the integration of solar energy into my projects.

Ttruly is a valuable resource for solar system design

The author, Dr. Andy Walker, describes in clear language all aspects of a solar project. He begins by providing a comprehensive description of the project development issues a practitioner may face and the financing options he/she will benefit from knowing better. This is followed by helping the reader build his/her familiarity with understanding and applying the solar resources available at a specific project site. Finally, Dr. Walker walks the reader through specific design and construction guidance for solar electric (photovoltaic), solar thermal (hot water and hot air), and passive solar systems. Throughout the book, he provides tips, interviews with industry leaders, and case studies. In addition, he provides how-to information for applying a wide range of available tools for making design decisions during sola projects. I believe Dr. Walker achieved his goal to present complicated concepts in terms that fit well with the needs of the practitioner faced with finding easy-to-understand guidance for solar system design and construction. I believe this book will become a widely used and highly respected resource for the seasoned practitioners as well as those new to designing and constructing solar energy systems alike.
